Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this fun, self-paced class, students will play a range of math games that support learning of addition and subtraction facts, skills, and strategies. Game-based play is fun and engaging and creates real-world situations for using and excelling in Mathematics.

In this class, the focus will be on learning how to play 4 addition and subtraction games, including 2-digit by 2-digit, regrouping, and decimals. All games can be modified to suit individual learner needs.

The materials required are simple and inexpensive! All games can be played with:
- Standard 6-sided dice (14 dice are ideal, but all games can be played with a minimum of 2 dice)
- Standard deck of cards.
- Whiteboard + marker (optional)

I offer options for solo play and partner play, along with printable game mats and recording sheets for each game.

Additionally, a printable Math Journal is provided to encourage students to record the key learnings from each game and reflect on the skills they are learning and developing.

**Printing game mats and the Math Journal are optional! These can be easily recreated on paper or a whiteboard.

I am an experienced middle-school Math teacher with over 15 years of classroom teaching experience, along with coaching and consulting Mathematics instruction district-wide. I struggled with Math anxiety growing up, and I understand deeply how traditional math instruction and math anxiety can hinder students from reaching their full potential. I believe that every child can learn and enjoy Mathematics, and I strive to create a welcoming, fun, and creative space for students to explore and learn.

Hello! My name is Jessie and I am an Elementary Teacher and Mathematics Consultant from Canada. I grew up feeling like I wasn't a "math person" and had a hard time getting through Math class. Through my over 12 years of teaching Elementary Mathematics, I grew to love Math, and my enthusiasm for solving problems and helping kids is infectious!

I don't just teach kids to get the answers - I help them grow their brains!

When kids are struggling in math class, there can be a few things going on. Sometimes kids have gaps in their knowledge, and they need learning to slow down so they can reinforce some foundational skills. Sometimes they need more practice to grapple with numbers and learn to own new skills. And sometimes, kids need new strategies to reason and solve problems. I can help kids to learn math - REAL math, not fancy math tricks and procedures to follow. I help kids grow in math every day by building a solid foundation of numeracy skills, reinforcing strategies, and growing confidence by solving WILD problems they never thought they would be able to do!

Can you solve 39 X 456 in your head? If the answer is no, join my class... we'll get there, and go way beyond!

I have been teaching Grades 4-6 for over 12 years and have a Masters in Education, a BEd in Secondary Education, a BA in English. I currently work in a role supporting teachers with their math instruction, assessment, and meeting student's diverse needs.

In my free time I love taking photos, hiking in the Rocky Mountains, and playing with my Pug named Bentley! I can't wait to learn and have fun together in my classroom soon! I live by the belief that there is no such thing as a 'math person', and
