This one-time class will be an introduction into coding, using Botley the robot. You child will be taught the first steps to programming: how to instruct the robot to reach his goal. The class will focus on the basic instructions Left, Right, Forward and Backward and the importance of the order and exactness of instructions. We will start with how to use the programmer, and then get into it! Each child will be given the chance to practice making the robot move with increasingly difficult tasks, they will orally give me the code (the directions) that I will need to program for the robot to move. We will move onto using the coding cards to see what the program is that we will have for each challenge and make corrections as needed. If they struggle the other children and I will give help as needed. Your child will be taught to think ahead to get to the goal, and then explain what steps need to be programmed to reach the goal. Every session is different depending on the ability of the children and group as we create challenges for the robot and your child to achieve. Your child does not need a robot, prior coding skills or any materials. This class will give a taste of what my weekly class will be like bot live and flex version, but can be repeated as many times as they’d like! I have provided some worksheets so your child can work on how they would solve the challenges for the other children. They are not essential but if your child's attention may wander a bit while it is not their turn I would recommend printing out the pdf so they can still be working on the challenges or they can point to show what they would do. The multi-day classes are currently separated by age, 4-6, and 6-9 and 1 on 1 that all go at the pace of the learners, and dive more into the details and fun of programming the robot. This would make a great STEM class for enrichment for both homeschooled children and school children. Botley is programmed in a similar way to the Beebot that many schools use in Technology class. Your child will be able to build on the skills that they are learning in school with this Botley robot. Further available lessons include, dancing, playing soccer, getting around a maze, loops, and construction. ***This class will require 2 or more children to run***
Learning Goals
Your child will learn the basic steps in programming my robot Botley.
They will think through all the steps to reach the goal and communicate these steps to me.
They will work on direction giving from the view of the robot.
Your child will collaborate to achieve the challenges where needed.

A Passionate Educator with a World of Experience.
Hello! I'm Mrs. Thelen, and I believe learning should be an adventure—one filled with curiosity, creativity, and fun! Since earning my teaching degree in England in 2002, I’ve had the joy of teaching children across the globe, from England and Denmark to Oregon, Texas, and Utah. Now, I teach children worldwide through Outschool, expanding my reach beyond the classroom. With teaching certifications in the UK, Utah, and Iowa, I’ve worked with young learners from six weeks to ten years old, primarily focusing on children ages 4–6. Teaching is not just my profession—it’s my passion.
I know that children learn best when they are fully engaged and excited about the subject. That’s why I design interactive, hands-on experiences that encourage participation in a small-group setting and one on one.
Right now, I’m especially excited about my coding/programming classes for children ages 4–8! Using a small robot, students tackle engaging challenges that teach them how to give instructions, solve problems, and think step by step—all while having fun with technology.
Teaching online has been an invaluable experience for me. During the 2020–21 school year, I worked with kindergartners in a virtual setting, ensuring that—beyond academic subjects—children could continue building connections, developing creativity, and enjoying a sense of community. That experience now shapes the way I design my online classes, ensuring your child feels engaged, supported, and excited to learn.
I've always loved being around children—it’s been a natural part of my life as the second eldest of nine siblings! My love for teaching, creating, and exploring new places has shaped the way I approach education, making every lesson an exciting journey. I can’t wait to share my enthusiasm and creativity with your child, helping them learn in a way that’s engaging, fun, and meaningful!
