Class Experience

The characters are in Palebank Village uncovering a mystery of residents being turned into frozen ice statues. They investigate while also dealing with criminal forces that are trying to attack the village. As they uncover the mystery, the characters seek a cure for the frozen curse and try to avoid being infected themselves.

In this Dungeons & Dragons game, the game is run by the teacher or Game Master (GM) who guides the story, while the learners are players controlling characters they've designed themselves. You MUST have access to an actual computer or laptop (works best with Google Chrome) because we will be using Roll20, a virtual tabletop, to present maps, music, and character tokens.

During this class, we will use level 1 to 3 characters. This would be a great adventure for beginners, because they will ease into the world and learn the rules without being overwhelmed by a large storyline. If your student already has a level 1-4 D&D character, they may bring an already existing one.

The teacher (GM/gamemaster) will describe the world and make the players feel like they are truly living in the world, assisted with maps, music, and visuals on the most popular virtual table top, Roll20. Players will be able to move their own characters around on the table top and cast their spells from their in-game character sheet. This is a great class for not only learning D&D, but also learning how to use a virtual table top to play online.

We will be meeting 5 times in one week for this adventure camp!

Monday, Day 1: Roll20 Basics, intro to the adventure
Tuesday, Day 2: Palebank Village adventure chapter
Wednesday, Day 3: Shadycreek Run & Croaker Cave adventure chapter
Thursday, Day 4: Salsvault Finale chapter

All learners will be expected to roleplay their characters in class, such as speaking as their character in dialogue and describing what they want their character to do. Costumes are not required but completely welcomed.

First 5 minutes: chat and intros, wait for late arrivals
Roleplay the adventure for around 45 minutes
5 minute break for snacks, stretching, and bathroom if needed
Finish the Roleplaying session for the remainder of class.

If you're familiar with Dungeons & Dragons, we'll be using language like "roll for initiative" and "perform a dexterity check". However, being familiar with this terminology or rules is not required to participate in the class. I will be facilitating the rules during the session and aiding the learners in creating a story that they are fully enveloped in. Some of my 5th Edition D&D rules will be modified for simplicity sake for the learners.

To play this game, you'll need to create a character on D&D beyond. I will import the character into Roll20 and it will already be setup on the day of the class, so all your learner will need to do is create a free Roll20 account and join the game prior to class. I will send instructions on how to create a character on D&D Beyond and how to join Roll20.

If you have not yet created a character and want some extra support, I can assist and provide you with the character sheet and guidelines so you can be ready to jump into class! I have a D&D Basic Character creation course ready for your learner to enroll in separately. If you are already familiar with table top RPGs and character creation, you may feel comfortable skipping this altogether and creating a character on your own before jumping into the story.

Please be aware: table-top RPGs are full of surprises and improvisation. They may be rated PG due to fantasy violence, magic, scary themes. I will be keeping the game as family friendly as possible but there will be fantastic battles and possible character injuries.

Learning Goals

Students will work together in cooperative puzzles and adventures to improve their story-telling, character building, social and critical thinking skills. During dice rolls, we will also be using very basic addition and subtraction.

Please be aware: table-top RPGs are full of surprises and improvisation. They may be rated PG due to fantasy violence, magic, scary themes. I will be keeping the game as family friendly as possible but there will be fantastic battles and possible character injuries. If your learner needs help creating a character, I will be directing them to D&D Beyond, which is a free and safe resource for D&D players. You will need to assist your learner in creating a D&D Beyond free account to create the character. I have a PDF that is accessible after enrollment for your learner to reference. In order to play the game, we will be using Roll20 virtual table top. It is a free and safe website popular for D&D. You will need to assist your learner in setting this account up as well. I will add them to the game before our session. It will be an external link we will use each class session so players may interact with the pieces on their own. (You MUST have a computer or laptop to play! This is not compatible with iphone, tablet, or safari browser.) YOU WILL NEED A STABLE INTERNET CONNECTION AND AN ACTUAL COMPUTER OR LAPTOP TO PLAY USING ROLL20. Please ensure that your wifi connection is strong enough to join both Zoom and Roll20 before accessing the game.
