~×~ × Welcome to the world of Coyote & Crow! ~×~ ×

The game is set in an alternate future of our own world (specifically North America) and was created and lead by an all Native team. The future is different because a massive climate disaster around the year 1400 changed everything; colonizers did not “discover” America, and the indigenous peoples of the Americas were able to forge their own path. It was never known as "America" and is referred to in-game as Makasing, with a main city base called Cahokia.

While humankind struggled under a centuries-long ice age, the planet began to heal and people survived. Hundreds of years in the future, civilization has flourished and technology advanced. Along the way, the people discovered and learned to cultivate the Adanadi, or the Gift, a strange purple mark left on all life after the event that changed the course of history (possibly a meteor, etc). The purple mark, when harnessed properly, has given humans access to gifts and abilities that we would call superhuman. However the world of Makasing isn’t utopian. As the world heals, nations have growing needs, treaties are tested, old grudges are renewed, and oceans and distant continents wait to be explored.

That's where YOU come in, players! In this course I will guide you through the process of creating a character, play through sample encounters and then launch a story of our own with your characters.

If you are new to role playing games, no problem! Here's an explanation of how it works: a role playing game is collective storytelling with a few rules and some dice rolling. These aspects, along with Player choices, help shape the story and its outcome. Players take on the role of protagonists in the story, while the Story Guide (Ms. Astrid) speaks for all other non-playable characters and helps referee the rules. The ending unfolds as we play, meaning the end of the story is completely up to us as a group and can go in different directions based on your choices and dice rolls.

Coyote & Crow is a well-designed game with lots of opportunities for players to also connect with their Indigenous heritage. Of course the game is open to all regardless of race, ethnicity or backgrounds, etc, but players with Native American and Ingenious heritage may also use this game to dig deep into their ancestry and incorporate their family culture and traditions as they build their characters. I personally have enjoyed weaving my own Indigenous South American heritage into my own Coyote & Crow character since the world of C&C also expands into Central and South America. There are lots of opportunities for future game quests to explore unknown regions, tribes and mysterious creatures.

If you have any questions please let me know by sending me a message. I'm looking forward to playing with you!

Parental Guidance
While Coyote & Crow gameplay generally emphasizes non-violent solutions and focuses on Indigenous cultures, there is still the potential for violence within the game's narrative and mechanics, as conflict situations can arise where characters may need to use force depending on their choices and the story unfolding; however, the game actively encourages players to explore alternative paths to resolve issues without resorting to violence.
Pre-Requisites
No prior experience with RPGs necessary, but students should be comfortable with writing character backstories and basic math skills as we calculate character stats.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I was privileged to meet some of the people who worked on this project when I purchased the core rule book at an Indigenous Comic Con in 2023, and have enjoyed playing through with my friends and family. Locally, I started a group specifically for teens wanting to play C&C and have now been running this weekly gaming group for several months. I find that it has been an amazing resource for teens, encouraging them to dig deep into history, explore their creativity and play collaboratively with others.

As a person of mixed heritage and race, I have struggled to connect with my different backgrounds. Playing C&C has helped me to feel more empowered and connected as I build a character that incorporates my Indigenous heritage, and I have been honored to see many of my current C&C teens doing the same. For those without Native heritage, it has been a wonderful journey for them as well, enabling them to learn, listen and grow.
