From Imagination to Entrepreneurship: Bringing My Business Idea to Life (Flex)

In this 4 week Flex course, students will bring their ideas to life as they apply elements of a great business idea, conduct market research, calculate start-up costs and develop a business model.

What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. After reviewing the teacher's video and other related You Tube videos assigned at the start of the week, a short, fun quiz will be given each week testing the material for that specific week. Additionally , students will be asked to post on the classroom page at least 3 things that stood out for them in each video. Furthermore, students will complete each of the following assignments/mini projects individually:- Week 1: What makes my business idea great? - Students will complete template provided and post a video on the classroom page for feedback from teacher and peers. Students will also be given the opportunity to interact with one another by giving at least one other student feedback on his/her submitted video for the assignment/mini project on the classroom page. Week 2: Market research - Students will create their own questionnaire using Google Forms, post it in the classroom for feedback, conduct market research by executing the questionnaires developed and documenting responses and complete a market research report. Templates will be provided. Students will make a video recording explaining the findings from their market research report and post on the classroom page for feedback from peers and teacher. Students will also be given the opportunity to interact with one another by giving at least one other student feedback on his/her submitted video for the assignment/mini project on the classroom page. Week 3: Start-up costs - Using template provided, students will calculate the start up cost for their own businesses and post a video recording where they will talk about the main start up costs for their business and where they intend to obtain financing from. They will post this video on the classroom page for feedback from peers and teacher. Students will also be given the opportunity to interact with one another by giving at least one other student feedback on his/her submitted video for the assignment/mini project on the classroom page. Week 4: Business Model - Students will post a video recording where they will talk about their business model using the various elements of the business model canvas. They will post this video on the classroom page for feedback from peers and teacher. Students will also be given the opportunity to interact with one another by giving at least one other student feedback on his/her submitted video for the assignment/mini project on the classroom page.

Class Experience

In this four week flex course, students will bring their individual business ideas closer to reality by learning about the elements of a great business idea,  conduct market research, calculate start-up costs and develop a business model. Teacher will upload self made videos at the start of each week which would include presentations using Google Slides. Short YouTube videos will be embedded in some presentations to reinforce concepts taught. A short, fun quiz will be given each week testing the material for that specific week. Apart from videos and quizzes each week to foster interaction and engagement with the students, students will be asked to post on the classroom page at least 3 things that stood out for them in each video. Additionally, they will be given mini-projects each week and will have to post their own videos explaining their answers to the various assignments/mini projects. Students will also be given the opportunity to interact with one another by giving at least one other student feedback on his/her submitted video for the assignment/mini project on the classroom page

While the ideal age range is 8-13 year olds, I definitely would welcome younger or older students who are interested in generating and developing their business ideas. Please note that this is flexible schedule course which means that this course does not include live meetings. 

Week 1: What makes an idea a great business idea - Students will learn about the elements of a great business idea and apply this in coming up with their own business idea. They will document what makes their ideas great by using the template provided and make a video recording that will be shared on the classroom page for feedback from peers and teacher. 

Week 2: Market Research - Students will learn about the importance of market research and learn how to design a simple questionnaire to get feedback about their ideas. They will then create their own questionnaire using Google Forms, post it in the classroom for feedback, conduct market research by executing the questionnaires developed and documenting responses and complete a market research report. Templates will be provided. Students will make a video recording explaining the findings from their market research report and post on the classroom page for feedback from peers and teacher.  

Week 3: How to calculate start up costs - Students will learn how to calculate the total cost of starting up businesses by using practical examples.They will then apply this and calculate the start up cost for their own businesses. Template will be provided. Students will post a video recording where they will talk about the main start up costs for their business and where they intend to obtain financing from. They will post this video on the classroom page for feedback from peers and teacher. 

Week 4: Business Model
Students will learn about the elements of the business model canvas using practical examples in class. For homework, they will then complete the business model canvas for their own businesses. Template will be provided. Students will post a video recording where they will talk about their business model using the various elements of the business model canvas. They will post this video on the classroom page for feedback from peers and teacher.

Students will bring their individual business ideas closer to reality by learning about the elements of a great business idea, conduct market research, calculate start-up costs and develop a business model.

They will also be provided with many opportunities to provide peers with feedback.
