FLEX: IEW Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons, Part 1
Class experience
US Grade 6 - 7
In this class, your learner will be working through the ***updated*** Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). This course takes the students through unit five of the program. Your learner will learn how to make an outline by determining key words and then move into paragraph writing by summarizing non-fiction texts and then retelling short fictional stories. In the midst of all that writing, your learner will spice up their pieces with...
Learners will be taught to organize thoughts and ideas by creating key word outlines from fiction and non-fiction texts, and writing paragraphs from them. They will dress up their writing by systematically adding parts of speech such as adverbs, strong verbs, and quality adjectives. Learners will also practice varied sentence structure by using a different sentence opener.
Homework Offered
The learner should be prepared to spend 1-2 hours per week on homework outside of the recordings. This will include writing compositions, studying vocabulary, and participating in asynchronous learning opportunities. The adult at home should be prepared to help when needed. Google Docs is mandatory for grading purposes. In addition to writing assignments, your learner will be encouraged to send a video of their retellings each week to the rest of the class. Your learner will not only be submitting this project, but will also be able to see others and provide them feedback as well as receive it. If learners are interested in being more creative with their retellings, Flipgrid will be available. Here your learner can add music, words, and backgrounds to their retellings. ***The following will be sent periodically throughout the course in addition to the instructional video. These will be used at my discretion to reinforce the structure and style being studied.*** - grammar and vocabulary challenges once a week using either Google Slides, Nearpod, and/or Quizlet - Google Slides asynchronous activities where the learners will apply strategies used in IEW's program to complete assignments, such as labelling parts of speech in a sentence or filling in a chart - Nearpod activities to review and master grammar concepts and parts of speech being studied - vocabulary quizzes and review on Quizlet1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

The recordings will be stored in Google Classroom and released each week. Google Docs will be used for compositions and Google Slides for asynchronous activities. To use these Google tools, each learner will need a GMail account (this can be your account or an account you set up separately for this class). The following are resources I provide and are completely optional for participation, but highly encouraged: External sources like Nearpod will also be used for asynchronous and office hour activities in this class. You do not need an account for this resource, but your learner will be prompted to type his/her name to participate. YouTube will be used for the recordings which will be shared in the Outschool classroom. Your learner will not be directed to the site. All activities are only available to the learners in this class.
