4 live meetings
2 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will work through their own IEW Student Book when we are not meeting. An adult at home may need to assist.Assessment
Turning work in to me is highly recommended so I can assess where your learner is in the writing process. I will provide feedback and/or grading at adult's request. I usually require all final copies to be turned in using Google Docs through Google Classroom. I can make accommodations for that requirement, depending on the age of your learner.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
This is a 1-on-1 tutoring class for IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing). We will meet live to provide direct instruction on your current IEW lesson. We will brainstorm outlines together, practice and use current stylistic techniques, and review and learn vocabulary. Every IEW lesson involves four things: 1) Brainstorming: We will read the source text together and determine key words for the outline. 2) Retelling: Learners are encouraged to test their outline by telling back the information in their own words. This can be done during live instruction or at home. 3) Writing: This is a multi-step process. Learners will be writing rough drafts, editing, and typing a final copy. Learners should have an adult at home that can help with the editing process. 4) Vocabulary: Every IEW course comes with vocabulary to study and include in writing. Learners who work 1-1 with me with have access to Quizlet where they will be able to study using the online tools. I reward learners for using vocabulary by giving them extra points on their compositions.
Learning Goals
Learners will progress through the IEW curriculum at their own pace, increasing their writing competencies each week.
Learners will use specific strategies from the IEW method to provide detail in their compositions.

Other Details
Learning Needs
I can work with the parent or guardian to determine best practices for each learner's needs. Feedback will be based on current strengths. As we progress, learners will increase proficiency through IEW's EZ+1 strategy.
Parental Guidance
When not in a tutoring session, parents will need to help their learner through the homework in their Student Book.
Pre-Requisites
Because this is 1-1, there are no prerequisites. Learners will work at their own pace and level.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Maryland Teaching Certificate
Master's Degree from Walden University
I am a certified IEW instructor with a Master's in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. I have been teaching the IEW method for six years, four of them online. I use rubrics that are tailored to meet each learner's needs, and make changes and accommodations as the learners progress.
Because of my experience in special education inclusion in public school, I'm adept at taking curriculum and adapting it to the needs of individual learners. I have also had practice with this over the years with IEW. I'm open to communication with parents to make this a successful learning experience.
