Class Experience

Students will learn:
-to recognize the keys on the piano and their names.
-finger numbers and how they relate to the position on the piano.
-melodic contour
-learning songs by rote and by reading
-learn the value of practice and extension at home
-basic rhythms and how to play and clap them
-proper piano position and posture
The teacher, Michelle Wheeler, will be using the principles in the Royal Conservatory of Music piano teacher certification program to help students begin their piano learning with proper technique and knowledge to continue into the RCM exam program if they so choose. Michelle is a certified Elementary Piano Specialist through the Royal Conservatory of Music, holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Masters in Music.
Students are required to post a video, question, or theory assignment in the classroom each week to show they are understanding the content. Students wishing to send the video privately to the teacher for feedback is great as well but be sure to share in the classroom what you learned that week. This can be a picture of your completed theory work, a clarifying question, or a comment about something you learned that week. In addition to our performance requirements students will discuss one composer every two weeks. We will post the composer and each student must provide one new fact about the composer to share with others in the classroom.
Each student will be required to have our piano method to work from. This may be purchased from your local music store or online.

Faber Piano Method- Primer edition lesson book and theory workbook. (purple coloured book)
Lesson book- $7.99US ($10.19CA) Theory Book- $6.99US ($8.92CA)

-Keyboard or piano to practice and play together from home
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
It is recommended to have a parent guide students through the lessons as well to help "see" any errors in form or to ensure to send in videos for the teacher to be able to guide them through.
