FLEX--2nd Grade Creative Writing
Completed by 1 learner
Ages 7-9
Live Group Class
No live video meetings
6 weeks
3-9 learners per class
What's included
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Writers will be assigned between 15-30 minutes of homework each day following their lesson. I strongly recommend that parents set a timer and stop writers at the end of that time from working any further until the next day. This helps keep writer's weekly projects to a manageable length. It also helps develop a love for writing.Class Experience
US Grade 2
COURSE OVERVIEW: This FLEX course supports learners with busy schedules by allowing them to complete Monday through Friday assignments at their own pace. It is intended to support and cultivate both a love of writing and essential writing skills. FLEX Writer's Workshop is best suited for writers who are ready for more independent work and responsibility or are working closely with a supervising parent. COURSE STRUCTURE: Monday through Thursday of each week, students will receive a brief, 5-10 minute, mini-lesson in video format. Writers are asked to watch and engage with the lesson as detailed in the lesson. Following the lesson, writers are expected to work for between 15-30 minutes on their assignment each day. I would encourage you to set an end time and stick to it like glue. • On Mondays, students create their first draft and upload a video of themselves reading it for Miss Marler. • On Tuesdays, students revise their drafts and send Miss Marler a picture of their writing after class. • On Wednesdays, students will use the edited first draft Miss Marler returns to them to write a final, fancy copy. • On Thursdays, students illustrate their work, take a photo of their illustration, and send it to Miss Marler. • On Fridays, students will record video of themselves reading and presenting their completed work to the class for questions and compliments!! COURSE CONTENT: We will be following the 5 Finger Story Telling (Characters, Setting, Conflict, Sequence, Resolution, Moral...yes, I know that is six. I didn't create this method.) method for creating opinion writing pieces. Each week, writers will be given a new picture writing prompt to begin a new story with. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT & EXPECTATIONS: Due to the nature of the FLEX class, parents are asked to take on more of an active role in their writer's learning and actively monitor their child's completion and submission of assignments. Writers are expected to watch, kindly comment, and ask thoughtful questions of Friday presentation videos. There is so much they can learn from each other and how to cordially participate with each other online through this forum. SUBMITTING WORK: Instructions for uploading will be included in class. Please submit assignments according to the following schedule: Mondays--Sloppy Copy (1st Draft) (Please submit video of writers reading their sloppy copy.) Tuesdays--Revised Sloppy Copy (Revised 1st Draft) (Please submit a picture of writer's writing thus far this week to Miss Marler. Wednesdays--Fancy Copy (Final Copy) Thursdays--Pictures (Illustration for Final Copy; Limit 2 please) (Please submit your writer's illustration to Miss Marler Fridays--Video Recording of Writer Reading Their Final Copy Monday through Thursday, submissions may be made through the student conversations page. Please attach and submit Friday videos to the class page. FLEX CLASSES: This class is a flex-class so writers are encouraged to commit for the entire 6 week process. COURSE PAYMENT & OUTSCHOOL REFUND POLICY Course fee is $50 per week or $300 in full. From Outschool: All Flexible Schedule classes have a standard refund policy: "Full refund until the class begins, or within 24 hours of purchase (until class starts), then a pro-rated refund based on the number of meetings." COURSE FEEDBACK: Teacher will provide student feedback on Tuesdays and Fridays following class. If you would prefer more frequent feedback, please let me know. I am happy to provide it. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: This class is suitable for beginning, intermediate, and advanced 2nd grade writers. Writers should be understand that a sentence expresses a complete thought, begins with capitalization, and ends with punctuation and be working towards consistently applying these ideas. More advanced students, up to the age of 9, are also welcome to polish their skills. Students should be willing to follow basic, classroom instructions and complete work either independently or with active parental monitoring. SPECIAL NEEDS: If your writer has a diagnosed or suspected learning disability, IEP, or 504 in place, please share any pertinent information with me BEFORE class begins. This will help me to prepare and anticipate potential situations beforehand. Thank you.
Learning Goals
This class is specifically designed to begin to develop writer's opinions by considering their reasons for their opinions and examples of their reasons. Additionally though, it also meets individual students where they are in their writing journey. The teacher will support students learning some of the following concepts as applicable to their individual needs:
....demonstrate proper formatting and indentation
....demonstrate proper letter spacing
....identify and insert appropriate punctuation
....identify parts of a sentence (subject, verb, & predicate)
....accurately conjugate verbs
....demonstrate subject-verb agreement
....use phonics to build spelling skills
....create paragraphs using connected ideas
....craft opinion writing pieces
....revise drafts of their pieces
....illustrate their pieces

Parental Guidance
Parents are encouraged to monitor and encourage their writer's progress as necessary. I will be encouraging writers to use the lesson in the Nearpod app, but I will ALSO include a youtube video of the daily lesson on the class page as a back-up or alternative. The Nearpod app offers writers additional tools to engage with one another and with the teacher.

I completed formal training in Writer's Workshop while teaching 2nd grade and loved implementing it in my classroom! Friday morning story-sharing is the BEST!!! :)
I have since taught this course in a live, on-going format on Outschool for almost 2 years now.
