Assessment
To remove the stress of what is sometimes a very daunting course of study, your learners will not have tests, quizzes, or formal grades in the class. Instead, I utilize positive verbal critiques to provide feedback and encourage improvement. However, if grades are requested I will provide them via rubrics that will suggest a grade. Learners progress will be gauged by the completion of their assignments, execution of techniques, contributions in critique sessions, and their class presence (being on-time, listening when I am speaking, and how they communicate with peers).

Class Experience

Drawing faces can be tricky, but making those faces fun and expressive is even more challenging! In this one-time class, young artists will learn what basic elements make an expression (such as the way an eyebrow raises or the corners of the mouth turn), how to simplify facial expressions, and practice drawing faces! To encourage simplification, reduce the looming stress of "perfection", and demonstrate the power of a confident line, young artists will only use non-erasable markers or pens in this class.

This class will begin with a brief introduction to the class and ourselves. After, I will guide young artists through a 15-minute line and shape drawing exercise that will help them get used to using non-erasable materials for drawing and build expressive faces. Once our warm-up is concluded, we will use the Facial Proportions Reference sheet to practice drawing a neutral face using what we learned in our warm-up. This short drawing will help young artists recognize and memorize ideal facial proportions. Then, we will use our Expressions Reference sheet to examine what elements make an expression. Learners will be asked to identify the expression on the reference and asked what characteristics they think make up that expression. Once young artists on confident in their proportions and knowledge of expression, we will practice several short gesture drawings of faces. Our gestures will be in 5 and 2 minute intervals- the short time period encourages simplification, forces learners to produce a quantity of drawings, and allows them to practice observation skills. We will practice gestures of expressions until the end of class!

Facial Expression Gesture Drawing is class based in observational drawing. Our goal is not to produce realistic portraits, but to practice drawing expressions and make the drawings themselves expressive!

Parental Guidance
Please note that this course uses online photo references for figure drawing purposes. These references are pulled from one primary photobank, Line-of-Action .com that may include content that is inappropriate for your learner. We will be focusing on faces for this class, so all models will be shown from the shoulders up. I will be screen-sharing this website in class, so students will not need to navigate there on their own.
Supply List
***MATERIALS***
For this class, young artists will need a non-erasable pen or marker in any color or colors. I prefer fine point markers and pens, but ultimately, it is up to your artist! They can use any kind of marker or pen, so as long as they are not erasing anything. Of course, learners will also need some type of paper to draw on. I like to use newsprint, but whatever paper that is available around the house will work well.

I will provide two images, a Facial Proportions Sheet and Expression References Sheet. For the best experience, I recommend that young artists have these images printed so they can take notes / mark the images. However, both images will be shared in class so students who cannot print these materials will be able to see them in class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am delighted to be able to offer classes that emphasize fine art techniques through the lens of observational drawing. Observational art is a method of learning to draw with three principles in mind: understanding of the subject, building looking skills, and practice of artistic technique. Through this method and practice, learners can draw anything. Completion of my courses will result in a learner who is engaged with art and understands basic art technique. Even students who are not aspiring artists have much to gain from drawing, including improvement of hand-eye coordination and hand dexterity skills.

Along with my bachelor’s degree in art history and studio art from a premier liberal arts institution in Ohio, I also have been teaching since 2016. My online teaching career began on Outschool in 2017. I have taught homeschoolers, unschoolers, and undergraduate students of all ages. My background in art history means that my classes are created with an understanding of historical precedence- I’m teaching what I know works! Many of my classes include examples of important artworks from masters for students to examine and learn skills from. In addition, my many years of teaching art have helped me curate concise and logical drawing curriculum that young artists can easily pick up and apply to their work. Every art class I teach hopes to provide learners with all the knowledge and support they need to grow as an artist.
