Assessment
To remove the stress of what is sometimes a very daunting course of study, your learners will not have tests, quizzes, or formal grades in the class. Instead, I utilize positive verbal critiques to provide feedback and encourage improvement. However, if grades are requested I will provide them via rubrics that will suggest a grade. Learners progress will be gauged by the completion of their assignments, execution of techniques, contributions in critique sessions, and their class presence (being on-time, listening when I am speaking, and how they communicate with peers).

Class Experience

Have you ever had a fantastic idea for an artwork, but found that when you tried to draw your idea vanished? Maybe you have had a great idea, but the drawing didn’t come out how you imagined it would. If you’ve had these experiences, you are not alone! As unfortunate as it is, this is a common problem with artists that can have many causes. But, with a few simple exercises, some practice, and a bit of creativity you can master your imagination to create fantastical works of art. In From Mind to Paper: Drawing with Imagination we will learn several exercises to help unlock the imagination, develop essential drawing skills, think creatively, and build confidence so we can put our thoughts on the page with ease.

From Mind to Paper: Drawing with Imagination is a course designed with a loose structure to allow for substantial practice of concepts and space to work the imagination out while teaching critical exercises and skills. Every class, after our introductory lesson, will begin with a neurographic or “thoughtless” drawing as we discuss any new experiences, artwork, or inspirations the class has had or found over the week. After, we will proceed into an art exercise to teach a particular skill or technique. Finally, we will end each class with a customizable drawing assignment that will reinforce the lesson and encourage young artists to practice what they have learned. Throughout the course, young artists will be encouraged to stay engaged with the lessons by sharing their work, conversing with peers, or asking questions.

Learning Goals

Learn why imagination is important and how to use it in art
Learn to ask "what if" questions to build creative thought

Syllabus

12 Lessons
over 12 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Why is Imagination Important?
For creative people, imagination is essential because it allows them to solve problems, think better, and perhaps most importantly, develop wonderful works of art. In our first lesson together, young artists will be asked to share their own thoughts on imagination. What does imagination mean to you? After every young artist has asked a “what if” question or two, they will create artworks using the questions they found the most interesting or inspiring.

Lesson 2:
Neurographic Drawing
In our second lesson, young artists will learn about neurographic drawing and its benefits. We will examine some different examples of neurographic artwork by various artists to build understanding of this drawing style and find inspiration to spark our creativity. Then, young artists will be challenged to fill an entire page (or two) with a neurographic drawing of their choice, using whatever materials they like.
90 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Developing the Visual Library
The third lesson will begin with a five-to-ten-minute neurographic drawing session to warm up the hands and imagination. During this time, young artists will be encouraged to chat amongst themselves, sharing how their week has been and asking “what if” questions. After, we will proceed to a three-part exercise that will help young artists develop their visual library. Once our exercise is complete, young artists will be asked to fill a page with subjects they have never attempted to draw before.

Lesson 4:
Composition Sketches
Young artists will begin class with another five-to-ten neurographic drawing warm up. As usual, they may choose to begin a new drawing or continue to work on a previous one. Then, we will proceed to our exercise for the day: composition sketches. I will guide learners through the process of creating a composition sketch and introduce some of the elements of composition that may be helpful to building successful composition sketches. The drawing assignment will be to fill a page with composition

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am delighted to be able to offer classes that emphasize fine art techniques through the lens of observational drawing. Observational art is a method of learning to draw with three principles in mind: understanding of the subject, building looking skills, and practice of artistic technique. Through this method and practice, learners can draw anything. Completion of my courses will result in a learner who is engaged with art and understands basic art technique. Even students who are not aspiring artists have much to gain from drawing, including improvement of hand-eye coordination and hand dexterity skills.

Along with my bachelor’s degree in art history and studio art from a premier liberal arts institution in Ohio, I also have been teaching since 2016. My online teaching career began on Outschool in 2017. I have taught homeschoolers, unschoolers, and undergraduate students of all ages. My background in art history means that my classes are created with an understanding of historical precedence- I’m teaching what I know works! Many of my classes include examples of important artworks from masters for students to examine and learn skills from. In addition, my many years of teaching art have helped me curate concise and logical drawing curriculum that young artists can easily pick up and apply to their work. Every art class I teach hopes to provide learners with all the knowledge and support they need to grow as an artist.
