This class will be discussion based and will center around current events that students have seen, heard, or read about in the news. These current events should be social sciences and humanities based. Possible topics include, the economy, healthcare, politics and the government, gun control, the Black Lives Matter movement, the LGBTQ community, global warming, events in history, etc. This is an opportunity for students to explore topics they are interested in and learn how to discuss with their peers. Students decide on the topic and I will provide an article and discussion questions based on that topic. Article links and discussion questions are posted for students and parents to review before the next session. Since starting this class, students have also said they enjoy discussions based around that day's episode of CNN10 so these are incorporated when time allows. Students do not need prior experience or knowledge. This class may run a little over the 40 minutes depending on the number of student participants and discussion.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their discussion skills as well as critical thinking skills by analyzing current events and discussing multiple perspectives of those events.

Parental Guidance
This class is focused on current events so some topics may be sensitive to some learners. Article links and discussion questions are posted in the classroom before class so I encourage parents to preview the article and questions to discuss with their student before class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
This course is current event based so the topics will vary. Should a student submit a topic that I feel is too sensitive for the class or a topic that l I am uncomfortable with I will let them know to pick another topic. I have a BA in Political Science and am well-versed in moderating sensitive political topics. I have also been leading class discussions as a cornerstone of my public school class and am experienced in mediating controversial subjects.
