Class Experience

We will begin by considering the history of the land where we all live (I will start by modeling this information about my own home, and learners can participate as they feel comfortable). Then we'll explore the Rainbow Crow myth of the Lenni Lenape (the tribe whose land I live on) from two different sources. We will consider the different roles and uses of primary versus secondary sources. Finally, we'll learn about the current activities of the Lenni Lenape, including why they no longer live in their original land. Information about the forced removal to the west will be shared directly from the Delaware Tribe of Indians website and will include a discussion of historical point of view.
During our discussions, we will focus on the essential skill of engaging in positive discourse: how can I express my opinion in a respectful manner while still bringing true to myself? We will also practice using textual evidence in discussion.
Learners are encouraged to share their background knowledge about Native people (Native Americans, or other Native people) as well as various mythologies.

Learning Goals

Students will learn and analyze a Lenni Lenape myth, explore some Lenni Lenape history, and be exposed to just some of the Lenni Lenape's activity and presence today. Students will also practice discussion skills including engaging in positive discourse, and using specific textual examples to support a point.

Sources
We will use the website https://native-land.ca/ to show and discuss the location of Native nations. Sources for the Rainbow Crow story are a version from the book _The Grandfathers Speak_, by Hìtakonanu'laxk (Interlink Books, New York, 1994) found here: http://www.nativeamericanembassy.net/www.lenni-lenape.com/www/html/LenapeArchives/LenapeSet-01/rnbwcrow.html and possibly this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuwgZSjuznY Lenni Lenape history (specifically as it pertains to their removal from their original land) will be shared from the Delaware Tribe of Indians website (http://delawaretribe.org/blog/2013/06/26/faqs/). Lenni Lenape life today will be shown by exploring the tribe's online presence (www.lenapeindiantribeofdelaware.com, http://delawaretribe.org/, nanticokelenapemuseum.org, https://nanticoke-lenape.info/) as well as two videos that show footage of Lenape powwows in their New York homeland in 2018 and 2019 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjkG0X6FF-A and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NChFWyOhFUY).
