In this ongoing weekly class, students will learn the elements of poetry through the use of interactive notebooks. We will cover types of poetry, review figurative language, and sound, rhythm, rhyme, and structure. We will study different types of poetry such as, Limericks, Ode, Haiku, Free Verse, Sonnets, Ballads, Elegy, and Narrative Poetry. Students will create their own poetry through individual writing assignments, as well as, group assignments. This class is taught in an interactive way through group discussions, teacher interaction, and hands on activities. Students will create an interactive notebook during each class that will serve as notebook notes that they can use for future poetry classes or to help them remember the elements of poetry when they need it. The benefits of an interactive notebook: By having students take all of their notes and then also practice and reflect in one location, it allows for them to be organized. Therefore, it eliminates excess papers being lost and misplaced when students would benefit from using them as they learn. Since this is an interactive class, students can enroll in one, two, or all topics. Students may start and stop classes as needed. Classes will repeat when the curriculum ends at Week 20. There is always an opportunity to revisit the beginning of the class when the class repeats. Classes can be taken out of order or in order as needed. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR CLASS: Composition notebook crayons/markers pencil scissors Worksheet (provided by teacher) Note: You will need access to a printer to print worksheets for each class.
