Elements of Art for Early Elementary Process Art Class: Collage Exploration
Class experience
Beginner Level
During the school year, I'll offer three mix-and-match trimesters of weekly art classes for early elementary students (ages 6-8), during which young artists will use different art media while weaving in discussion about the elements and principles of art. This fall, we'll delve into line, shape, and color using drawing media, collage, and watercolor painting. The fall session is 12 weeks (in winter/spring, sessions will be a little bit shorter). WHAT WILL WE DO OVER THE 12 WEEKS? We will be...
WHAT SKILLS WILL LEARNERS DEVELOP? My goals for learners are: -Gain familiarity with different art materials - we'll stick with collage, drawing media (crayons/markers/oil pastels), and watercolor. -Learn some art vocabulary, and gain comfort in talking about art: as a museum educator, I love facilitating conversation about artwork with kids! Looking at and discussing the work of ourselves and others (peers, or established artists) is an important skill to develop in tandem with art-making. -Demonstrate understanding of different art elements/principles.
I'm a teaching artist and illustrator/bookmaker with 20+ years of experience working with kids of all ages! One of my favorite things about teaching is watching kids explore and make discoveries, and creating a space for them to do so. I've worked in schools, museums, private & homeschool groups, and libraries, facilitating kids' artmaking.
I will post a detailed supply list with suggestions in the classroom, but you'll need pencils, drawing paper, colored construction paper, a glue stick, scissors, oil pastels, watercolor set (the classroom type - not an expensive art-store set, though I have brand recommendations; I prefer Prang) and paintbrushes, and watercolor or heavier weight drawing paper. If you have none of these, you can expect to spend $20-25.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We'll be using scissors during collage, and glue sticks. Table covering suggested while using oil pastels and paints.
Calling all art explorers! The act of creation shouldn't be limited to professional artists. Artistic expression is for EVERYONE - something you should feel entitled to do, without judgment, your whole life long. Unfortunately, many of us have...
