Have you ever wondered how animated cartoons are made without computers? Then you will probably have lots of fun in this hands-on workshop! We create a complete cartoon animation, and everyone contributes an original animated scene.

Description
Class Experience
- Students learn to create original cartoon character designs, storyboards, and hand-drawn animated sequences - During brainstorming sessions students contribute verbal and illustrated responses to generate character ideas, names, and story plots - Through classroom activities, students learn to array of traditional animation production techniques which include: lighting, image registration, frame-rates, and editing - Using traditional storyboarding techniques, students practice how to quickly communicate their concepts and contributions - With practice, students demonstrate the practical use of animated "cycles", "squash-and-stretch", "anticipation", "gravity", and "implied motion"
There can be approximately 1-3 hours of optional drawing and animation homework per week (depending upon each student's interest and motivation). Required Materials - Lots of white A4 printer paper - Pencils and erasers - Thick black pens and Sharpies - Colored markers - Paper "hole-punch" or similar office tool - Homemade light table (box/plexiglass) or tablet glowing background Optional - Basic smartphone or tablet with camera - tripod for smart devices - Free “Flip-a-Clip” or "Stop Motion Studio" app This is a live class, and the instructor uses a 2-camera system to feature specific illustration styles and techniques. Students are encouraged (within reason!) to spontaneously interact with the instructor and others during most exercises, and this workshop should be be interactive and lively.
Final project presentation
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
