Class Experience

This workshop is for strong beginners and intermediate-level learners, and requires some previous animation experience. Students develop cartoon characters, storyboards, and contribute animated sequences from a "shot-list" created by the group.

Students learn the fundamentals of traditional cartoon animation by hand-animating their own repeating sequences. The teacher demonstrates techniques such as; keyframing, squash-and-stretch, anticipation, and full-motion "cycles".

Weekly Class Activities

1. Week One:

- Design your cartoon character for animation

Relying on simple cartooning techniques demonstrated by the teacher, each student will design a cartoon character which can be easily animated.

2. Week Two:

- Storyboard your scene for animation

Students learn to plan their specific animation using storyboarding techniques to communicate establishing shots, medium shots, and close-ups

3. Week Three:

-Traditional light-table animation techniques

With their improvised light table, students draw pencil sketches and use page-flipping techniques to pre-visualize their character's movements. Combining new skills, each student begins drawing an animated sequence featuring a repeating "motion-cycle".

4. Week Four:

-Finalize an animated "cycle"

Each student inks, colors, and completes their page-flip animation of between 3 to 9 hand drawn and properly oriented pages.to present to the class for admiration!

5. Optional post-workshop homework:

-Photograph and edit a final digital cartoon animation

- Using a smartphone camera, each student can photograph and edit a final animated sequence using the free “Flip-a-Clip” app.

Learning Goals

- Students learn to create original cartoon character designs, storyboards, and hand-drawn animated sequences

- During brainstorming sessions students contribute verbal and illustrated responses to generate character ideas, names, and story plots

- Through classroom activities, students learn to array of traditional animation production techniques which include: lighting, image registration, frame-rates, and editing

- Using traditional storyboarding techniques, students practice how to quickly communicate their concepts and contributions

- With practice, students demonstrate the practical use of animated "cycles", "squash-and-stretch", "anticipation", "gravity", and "implied motion"

Creativity Coach, Cartoonist, Animator, Word-Nerd

Hi, please call me Randy! As a college professor of game design and animation I mentored the artistically gifted for over 20 years. I have a Master's Degree in education and recently taught over 5,000 ESL classes to more than 1000 VIPKids. Parents routinely praise me for my humorous and creative classes and I love to keep things lively!

Much of my creative arts curriculum stems from experiences as an award-winning cartoon animator and educational game producer in San Francisco. I rely on these professional skills and instincts in the classroom to identify your child's artistic potential, and it's always a joy to nurture their creative abilities.

As a kid myself I always enjoyed language games that reward clever wordplay like "telephone" and "madlibs", and have designed a series of word games and activities that really spice-up vocabulary and grammar classes. Students who may think vocabulary is "booooring!" can abruptly devour their nomenclature (eat their words) as they learn how the English language is alive and composed of fragments from world history!
