Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their reading comprehension skills by utilizing thought organization techniques and graphic organizers.
Students will develop a liking to reading a classic novel.
I have taught middle and high school English Language Arts for a decade.
Each half of the chapter has about four pages. Students should spend 15 minutes skimming the first half of the chapter assigned prior to the first class of the week. To prepare for the second class of the week, I will ask students to skim through the second half of the chapter before class. I do not need the students to memorize what they are reading. This will allow students to feel more comfortable reading aloud to myself and their classmates and gives the student prior knowledge which will assist class discussions.
Class uses Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. I would suggest having a paper or digital copy. A free kindle version is available here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/120 I am using a used copy in class. The book is available for free here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/120 The kindle version has the nicest formatting. You will need a composition notebook, a pencil, a good eraser, and some kind of coloring utensil such as a colored pencil. Dollar stores have great erasers! You may want to keep your classwork items in an organizer of some kind.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
