US Grade 4 - 7
Does your learner struggle with study skills? Writing? Editing? Reading? Learning a new or second language? Fortunately, there are assistive technology tools available that can help with all of these important skills. In this 40-minute class we will learn how to use Immersive Reader, which is a free assistive technology tool available on Microsoft products. Immersive Reader can improve reading comprehension, grammar/editing skills, and increase fluency for English language learners. It can help build confidence for emerging readers learning to read at higher levels and offer text decoding solutions for students with learning differences such as dyslexia. Some features we will learn in the class include: How to read text aloud while simultaneously highlighting the word being read. This allows the text to become accessible to students of different ages and abilities, and also helps emerging readers learn to recognize new words. • dictating speech • blocking out everything but one line to help students focus • identifying parts of speech on the screen • spacing fonts and lines to avoid "visual crowding" • breaking words into syllables • translating text into 60+ languages (40+ read aloud) • changing the color, size and font of text to make it more legible • using the picture dictionary to see visual definitions At the end of the class students will be given a writing prompt and will get a chance to practice using Immersive Reader to type/dictate their responses to the writing prompt.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to use Immersive Reader tools on a variety of different Microsoft platforms (Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, websites through Microsoft Edge)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Colorado Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
As a Special Education teacher, I provide assistive technology accommodations to many of my students, and I teach them to use Immersive Reader at my school as early as third grade. I love Immersive Reader because it's free, accessible to all, and it "levels the playing field" for students who struggle with reading, writing, and just study/research skills in general.
