1-2 hours per week. Students will submit final drafts of their typed essay within one week after class #2 and #4. Late work (unless extenuating circumstances) will not receive feedback. Parents Please Note: I will keep homework to a minimum, but students that take this course need opportunities outside of class to apply what they have learned to their writing. I also feel it is important for their work to be reviewed and given feedback, so that they begin taking accountability for their own learning.Assessment

Intermediate - Advanced Level
Every student has the ability to improve and strengthen their writing. From students that need a little extra help to students that possess excellent writing skills, there is always room to create and achieve new learning goals. In this four-week course, students will learn and/or review the conventions and standards of English writing. Beginning April 2023, students will only compose two essays in our four-week session instead of an essay each week. This will give students more time to become familiar with the essay writing process. This course is the second section of "I Can Write Well" (https://outschool.com/classes/i-can-write-well-a-six-week-writing-program-for-elementary-students-JLtYtGD9?usid=QdRM00CZ&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link) This class can also be taken independently without taking part one. The goal of this course is for students to be able to construct an opinion and expository essay. Weeks 1 & 2: In these classes, students will practice: (1) Identifying the difference between a claim and an opinion (2) Identifying the elements of an opinion essay (3) Creating an essay with clear organization patterns and smooth transitions. Essays are due at the start of Week #3 Week 3 & 4: In these classes, students will examine expository essays. Students will review transitions, concluding statements, and relevant details. Students will begin to compose an expository essay in this class. Essays are due a week after the course ends. At the end of class each week, students will brainstorm and draft their compositions. After week #2 and week #4, students will have one week to submit their final drafts in .doc, .pdf format or as a shared document in GoogleDocs. I will provide written feedback for all students. Students will also have an opportunity to use the feedback to improve their essay and re-submit. I feel it is important for students to have opportunities to apply the skills learned and gain information on how well they have used the newly acquired information. Please note that due dates will be assigned. Late work will not receive feedback (unless there are extenuating circumstances). A typical class will follow this structure: 1. Warm Up -3 minutes 2. Lesson Introduction - 2 minutes 3. Direct Instruction with Active Class Participation - 10 minutes 4. Guided Practice - 10 minutes 5. Independent Writing Practice - 15 minutes 6.
