This is a non- instructional class that does not build upon knowledge so it's easy to join in at any time. This is a perfect fit if you have a chess player who wants to belong to an after school club and spend more time playing the game with other kids. The majority of the class will be active play using Lichess, an online resource where each student will be provided with his or her teacher-monitored account. Note: Class minimum must be met for a true club experience. This club experience...
Students will play chess in a positive space with other players and strengthen their skills in solving chess puzzles/tactics.
In some cases, having an additional device to play chess on is helpful for students, but is not required.

Students will be actively involved in playing chess matches with other students. Therefore losing chess games will be part of this experience. Losing is something that can negatively impact a student's confidence, even though the philosophy of this club is that losing helps us win next time. There will be minimal acknowledgement of games won and loss, but a leaderboard will be featured for those students who work outside of class on chess puzzles. Students who struggle with competition or losing (beyond the expected) should be enrolled with consideration of these points. Students will also be provided with their own Lichess accounts, which are teacher-monitored and communication restricted, but since it is an open online resource, parental oversight is still encouraged and expected.
We will use Lichess to play chess with friends.
