In this weekly chess club, students will have the opportunity to learn new tactics and strategies, work on their game analysis, improve their chess skills with puzzles, and engage with fellow chess enthusiasts! Students will play an active role in their chess development in this hands-on, fun-filled class as they play proctored games both with fellow students and their teacher, improve their skills with puzzles, and receive personalized one-on-one attention from the teacher to help them achieve their chess goals! Learning goals: - Beginner and intermediate tactics - Board vision (knowing the notation of the chessboard) - Basic Openings - Strategic Thinking - Problem Solving Skills - Abstract Reasoning Skills - Development of better critical thinking skills - Learning to solve chess puzzles - Knowledge of the beginning, middle, and end game. - Development of both an understanding and appreciation for chess. About the teacher: Mr. Ryan has been helping students develop both their chess skills and their love of the game for three years. He is highly invested in providing personalized tutelage to his students to help them improve their chess competency in a way that works best for them. With his thorough and informative teaching style, Mr. Ryan makes sure that every lesson is packed full of information that enlightens and inspires his students to continue to progress with this multi-skill strengthening game. Mr. Ryan is in the top ninety-ninth percentile in chess ratings on Chess.com and lichess.org and has a USCF rating of 2044. **Every week students will go over new chess puzzles, theory, and play games - this course is not sequential, and students can join in at any time!**

Optional Materials: - Access to a chessboard with pieces and/or a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer to practice their puzzles and play against their fellow classmates each week via lichess.org or chess.com (in KID MODE - an option that optimizes safely, taking away the chat function and leaving just the best part: Chess!)

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
