Dictionary Detective - How to Use a Dictionary Successfully

In this class, the student will be taught how to use a dictionary successfully. The definition of a dictionary will be given which is a written or internet source which arranges words into alphabetical order, gives their definition(s), as well as their part of speech.  Guide words which are at the top of the dictionary will be explained.  Also discussed will be why a dictionary is helpful in enhancing vocabulary and comprehension. We will then have each learner select a word from the dictionary, read the definition, and then compose a sentence using the word they selected correctly in written form.  These sentences will then be shared. Between 2-5 words will be selected, one at a time, by the learner and then placed in written sentences.   If time permits, they may also draw a picture which illustrates their sentence(s).  Prior Knowledge: We will be using a hard cover dictionary, so your learner will need to have one in order to take this class. It would be helpful if your dictionary is a children's version. Your student must be able to read and spell at an appropriate level for their age.  so they are able to read the dictionary definition.  Also, they must be able to write a full sentence.  Please bring a children's or beginner's dictionary to class, paper, a pencil, and crayons.  I will teach to one learner. Class Rules:  We mute so we do not talk over one another, we raise our hand if we have a comment or a question, we are kind and respectful to everyone, and as per the Outschool rules, we turn our camera on at the beginning of class so I may verify the learner.
