Defeat the Wither Storm: A Minecraft Escape Room of Puzzles and Trivia
Class experience
In this one-time activity, students will play a virtual escape room inspired by Minecraft. The story follows Steve as he explores new worlds and encounters exciting characters from Minecraft mods, like the Wither Storm, Fire and Ice Dragons, and many others. I have created this activity in PowerPoint, and as students navigate back and forth through the different slides (or "rooms") they will encounter a variety of fun and educational challenges, including word puzzles, logic puzzles, and...
Students will learn: -how to work as a team -how to use clues and reasoning to solve logic problems or word puzzles -how to work efficiently within a limited amount of time -how to think outside the box or find creative solutions to problems
I am a teacher, playwright, and published YA author, and I've previously worked for a high school where I taught writing and ACT/SAT prep. I've also taught English to younger children overseas, led educational events and programming at various theaters around Chicago, and taught reading, language arts, and educational escape room-based courses to more than 7000 elementary and middle school students online.
Sometimes students like having scratch paper to help them work out some of the puzzles. Zoom also has an annotate feature for writing on the screen that works with most laptops (although unfortunately not Chromebooks or a few other models). Writing isn't necessary for solving the puzzles, but can be helpful for visualizing or making notes.
While there are some references to swords, magic, and fighting a large monster, it is all Minecraft-themed and kid-friendly. The puzzles are also not stressful, and no students will be put on the spot to answer anything they don't want to.
