Class Experience

In this one week mini course students will learn strategies and tools to become more confident and successful readers. In each 30 minute lesson, we will work on phonemic awareness exercises, simple decoding activities, and writing with CVCe words or words with "Bossy E". Students will engage in strategies that include sounding out words, pound and sound, orthographic mapping, and more. Teacher will use a variety of engaging tools such as props, slides, technology, whiteboards, and games to help students grasp the concepts being taught.

I will provide a welcoming, friendly environment where students are encouraged and rewarded with praise for effort and hard work. It is important to me that students and parents feel comfortable and positive relationships are established. Getting to know my students as a person and learner is valuable to me. I will have a time of introductions and sharing at the beginning of class so that I can foster these types of relationships. I will follow a structured approach both in classroom management and content delivery so the students know what to expect. Each students' learning is of utmost importance to me so I will always take their learning needs into consideration and be flexible where needed.

It is recommended that students have already taken the first 2 courses: Decoding Detectives: Short Vowels and Decoding Detectives: Digraphs but this is not required especially if your child already has knowledge of these skills. If a student has not taken the above mentioned courses then they will need to know all letters and letter sounds of the alphabet and have a solid understanding of the 5 long and short vowel sounds. Some knowledge of basic digraphs is also preferred (th, sh, wh, ch).

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Mandi VanDuyn. I have been teaching for 12 years in the state of Indiana. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with experience teaching graders K-3. Currently I have 4 years experience teaching reading intervention in a Title 1 school. I have several years of experience using a variety of digital tools and online platforms for learning. I recently have branched out and started teaching English online.
Teaching students to ‘crack the reading code’ is a passion of mine. I have been researching the science of reading for several years and am continuing to learn and apply those strategies in my teaching today. My goal as a teacher is to create engaging lessons combining the science of reading with the individual learner in mind. I am dedicated to working with you and your child in helping them succeed.
When I am not teaching, you will find me spending time with my family (husband and two daughters I adore), reading, or shopping!
I can not wait to meet you and your child in my classroom.
Let’s crack that code together!
