Beginner Level
For this one-week course on the hero's journey in creative writing, we'll embark on an intensive exploration structured around both the theory and practice of crafting a narrative. The course is designed to help students understand the classical structure of a hero's journey and apply this framework to develop their own creative stories. Course Structure and Content Day 1: Introduction to the Hero’s Journey What’s Covered: Overview of the hero's journey and its significance in literature and film. Activities: Lecture with examples from well-known works like The Avengers, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games to illustrate key points. Day 2: Building the Heroic Character What’s Covered: Key traits and motivations of heroic characters. Activities: Interactive exercises to create detailed character profiles, utilizing slides and group discussions. Day 3: The Call to Adventure What’s Covered: What triggers the hero's quest and how to write compelling beginnings. Activities: Writing workshop focused on crafting engaging 'calls to action' for the characters developed. Day 4: Trials and Transformation What’s Covered: Mapping out the central challenges and the transformation of the hero. Activities: Group work to design trials and discuss their impact on character development, supported by video clips for inspiration. Day 5: Presentation and Feedback What’s Covered: Sharing and refining the stories developed over the week. Activities: Students will present their stories, receive peer and instructor feedback, and discuss the insights gained from the journey. Teaching Methods and Style The course will combine several dynamic teaching methods: Lectures to introduce each day's theme and provide a theoretical base. Interactive Discussions facilitated by Socratic questioning to deepen understanding and encourage critical thinking. Group Activities to foster collaboration and creative idea exchange. Writing Workshops where students will apply what they've learned in real-time and get immediate feedback. Students will be actively engaged throughout the course, with ample opportunity to interact with both the instructor and their peers. This setup ensures that by the end of the week, students will not only grasp the concept of the hero’s journey but will also have started crafting their own stories, ready for further development beyond the classroom.
