US Grade 2 - 5
In this 5-week flex course designed for young writers aged 7-11, we invite you to delve into the fascinating world of creative writing, uncovering the key elements of storytelling. As part of Creative Writing Explorers, learners will independently explore character development, world-building, plot creation, crafting dialogue, and editing through engaging activities and weekly lessons. As learners progress through each week, they'll apply these skills to create their own short story, which they will gradually build upon and eventually share within our online class community. This course offers an engaging and supportive environment for budding storytellers to cultivate their craft while sharing their progress with fellow writers. Course Structure: Each week, learners will focus on a new aspect of creative writing, with related activities and exercises to complete at their own pace. Here's the weekly outline: Week 1: Creating Characters - Learners will discover how to develop unique and memorable characters for their stories. They'll have access to mini-lessons, interactive exercises, and prompts to guide their character creation process. Week 2: Building Worlds - We'll explore the art of world-building. Learners will create the setting for their story, inspired by video lessons, resources, and world-building exercises. Week 3: Crafting Plots - This week, learners will develop an exciting and engaging plot for their story, guided by educational videos, plot-creation resources, and writing exercises. Week 4: Writing Dialogue - Learners will master writing realistic and dynamic dialogue between their characters, utilizing instructional videos, resources, and practice activities. Week 5: Editing & Showcasing Your Story - This final week, learners will learn basic editing techniques to polish their story. Afterward, they'll present their completed story in the online class forum, where they can receive feedback from their peers and the teacher. Throughout the course, learners will have opportunities to self-check their work, share their ideas in the class forum, and reflect on the creative writing strategies they've employed. By the end of this 5-week course, each young writer will have a completed short story and a foundational understanding of creative writing principles.
