Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
If you want to try creating artwork with illustrated lettering, this 4-week Flex course will guide you through 4 standalone projects. This is an art class that is appropriate for beginner and intermediate learners, and it covers one project per week. Check out the video to see examples of each project!

Learners may customize each project by choosing their own letters, words, or saying. Each technique that is demonstrated may be applied to the learner's own choice of lettering style or patterns. Each week's project results in a frame-able artistic lettering piece!

Week 1: Large initial letter with pattern
Game Challenge: Practice imitating a serif font!

Week 2: Graffiti project
Game Challenge: Use the provided graffiti word to ink it in your own style!

Week 3: Negative space ("invisible" letters with shadow)
Game Challenge: Use the provided cursive font to try negative space with cursive - a difficult task!

Week 4: Combining 2 or more lettering styles with a quote or phrase
Game Challenge: Illustrate the meaning of a provided word with the letters themselves!

SUPPLIES:
If you will be working on paper, you can use everyday art supplies for this class. You will need a pencil, eraser, ruler, lettering pens or markers in various colors and sizes, plain paper or card stock.

NOTES:
* This class does not teach calligraphy or one particular hand lettering style.
* Learners are welcome to use digital art apps or software. The videos include tips for layers, brushes, etc. but please note that this class does NOT specifically teach the apps or software. Learners should already have basic familiarity with the software or app they are using.

HOW DOES A FLEX COURSE WORK?
Flex classes are a great way for learners to work at their own pace, when they can fit it into their schedules! There are no live or scheduled meetings on zoom. I post a new video lesson each week, demonstrating the techniques with step-by-step instructions. Learners work on their own project as they watch the video. Each video is between 30 to 45 minutes; learners may need some additional time to completely finish the piece. Learners should post a photo of their completed project in the Outschool classroom.
A Flex class is great for: learners who can work on their own, and learners who prefer a flexible schedule. PLEASE NOTE that learners may need parent support to log in to the Outschool Classroom, access the weekly video, take a photo of their homework assignment and post the photo, etc.
A Flex class may *not* be a good choice for: learners who want a live class with live video interaction, learners who find it difficult to work independently, or learners who will not be able to take photos of work and post them for my feedback.

Hello! My students call me Ms. Helen and I pride myself on offering classes that are great learning experiences. This includes some unique content for teens and tweens: Linguistic Puzzles; "Not Typical" writing classes; Creative Lettering techniques; and a 4-day Unusual Art Camp that introduces teens to unorthodox art mediums used by contemporary illustrators. I also provide one-on-one support for high school students writing their college application essays.

I have a broad range of teaching experience spanning 20 years, including my current teaching at the college level, as well as teaching teens, children, and professionals. I also work as an editor, creative content creator and consultant. So why teach on Outschool? I find that the small-format classes on Outschool allow for specialized topics that students can choose based on their interests.

You can "Follow” me on Outschool to receive notifications about upcoming classes and new offerings that I post. Please reach out with any questions!
