Class Experience

In this session, students will learn from a graduate philologist what it is really like to read an epigraphical inscription. I will share with you the tricks that you need to identify different types of inscription and the most common abbreviations used. No previous knowledge of Latin is needed, but those who do know Latin will have a chance to put their translating skills into practice!

The first 5 minutes will be a short introduction of the participants and a presentation of the challenge; then, we will spend 30 minutes deciphering 3 different inscriptions, using some of the tricks that philologists have come up with in order to guess the meaning of missing parts; finally, there will be a short discussion on career paths related to epigraphy.

To make it more fun for everyone, students will only be given the inscription at the very beginning of the session so that everyone starts from scratch. At that point, students will have the opportunity to print it if they wish to take notes on it. At the end of the session, all students will be sent a list of the most common Latin words and abbreviations that can be found in inscriptions, as well as a copy of the 3 inscriptions worked on in class.

Learning Goals

They will learn what the job of the epigraphist is, as well as some common epigraphical terminology.

Hi!

My name is Ana and I love making the world of ancient languages accessible for all. I work as a full time specialist of Latin and Greek. I speak several languages and I am always on the go learning a new one - at the moment I am working on some Modern Greek!

I have a degree in Classical Philology (Greek, Latin and Classical Civilisation) from the University of Barcelona, and I hold qualified teacher status both in the UK and in Spain. I used to work as the Head of a Classics department and I am still heavily involved in the Classics community, but now I work from my home office (and my kitchen!) by the River Thames, from where I can reach students across the world.

I think learning should be hands-on, and I will teach you about the Romans and Greeks using plenty of images, getting you to cook and singing along to catchy tunes. I believe we learn about the past by using all our senses, and I always try to get students feeling rather than just learning about the subject.

I have a license from the PLA and often go mudlarking looking for archaeological remains and helping register them. As a result, I am often covered in mud. Ask me about my latest find!
