In "Core Communication Skills for Teens", your teen will learn to be an effective communicator. A step up from basic conversations.

Class experience

Week 1: Understanding Nonverbal Communication - Learners will identify, analyze, and practice nonverbal cues
Week 2: Listening - Learners will recognize good listening skills and practice active listening techniques
Week 3: Listening Critically – Learners will practice identifying, recognizing, and filtering imprecise communication. Learners will practice and analyze ambiguous messages.
Week 4: Speaking Responsibly – Learners will discover that people have the ability to control what they say and how they say it. Learners will recognize the responsibility of being an effective communicator
Week 5: Communicating Constructively – Learners will explore what makes some conversations easy and others difficult. Learners will recognize productive communication even when disagreeing.
As a career coach, I help people create their best lives and as a distinguished toastmaster, I am trained in communication. I know that if a person is unable to communicate properly, the likelihood of them being able to create their best life is slim. I am also cognizant of the fact that many of our youth are unable to communicate in face to face settings. It is the number one complaint from employers today. Our kids have enough challenges to overcome that are difficult to address. Being able to communicate properly is a challenge that can be readily addressed.
Homework Offered
No actual homework will be provided; however, extension activities will be provided weekly. Examples of Extension Activities: 1- Learners will create a short story 2- Learners will use the media to identify various types of communication
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Feedback will be provided regularly and as needed
Grades Offered
Learners will need access to a microphone (built-in computer mic is fine) and a camera to allow for interaction and practicing during class. There will be weekly practice opportunities for the teen to use at home – a natural extension of what was learned in class that day.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This course may be canceled if it does not have a minimum of two learners enrolled for the first class. f insufficient enrollment, parents will be given the option to transfer the learner to another section or receive a refund.
