Class Experience

Core Communication Skills for Teens addresses the fact that for many of the most important skills we need in life, we don’t always get sufficient practice before we’re expected to demonstrate them. Often, these skills are learned by watching others, but studies and experience have shown that this is not the best way for our children to learn. In Core Communication Skills for Teens, your child will learn valuable communication techniques and practice using them in everyday life. Your teen will learn and practice what to say; when to say it, and how to say it. Students will become better able to listen with understanding, speak responsibly, and handle disagreements skillfully.

By the end of this series, students will have the tools they need to ensure what they need to say is being expressed properly. They will also have the knowledge that allows them to critically listen and understand what is being conveyed to them in verbal and nonverbal communications.

Week 1: Understanding Nonverbal Communication
Week 2: Listening
Week 3: Listening Critically
Week 4: Speaking Responsibly
Week 5: Communicating Constructively

During the class, we will use a variety of techniques (discussion, pair-sharing, games, and slides) to practice the different aspects of communication. This course is a partnership between me and your child. We will practice as much as we need to help them feel comfortable. This course is based on established and proven methods.
Learning Goals
Week 1: Understanding Nonverbal Communication - Learners will identify, analyze, and practice nonverbal cues

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a career coach, I help people create their best lives and as a distinguished toastmaster, I am trained in communication. I know that if a person is unable to communicate properly, the likelihood of them being able to create their best life is slim. I am also cognizant of the fact that many of our youth are unable to communicate in face to face settings. It is the number one complaint from employers today. Our kids have enough challenges to overcome that are difficult to address. Being able to communicate properly is a challenge that can be readily addressed.
