In this 30 minute class we will work on a published speech and apply a different technique each time to sound and appear a more confident public speaker (for example changes in pace, pitch, use of pauses, projection, body language etc).

Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
  • No matter what level of public speaking your learner has this class will teach them techniques to improve and develop in confidence.
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 16+ years of experience teaching English and Drama (and some Music, and PSHCE) to 11 to 16 year olds in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties,  nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, some TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos and have a regular podcast.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. I have also coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15).
Learners will need to be able to comfortably read a page of text to be able to apply public speaking techniques. I am happy to help with the pronunciation of difficult words and new vocabulary though.
I highly recommend learners purchase their own copy of the book we are using so they can carry on rehearsing after class and find more to work on... but I can provide copies of speeches if needs be:
'Monologues for Kids and Tweens' by Mike Kimmel- ISBN 9780998151328
OR
'Monologues for Kids and Tweens II' by Mike Kimmel- ISBN 9781953057037

OR for older learners
'Monologues for Teens' by Mike Kimmel- ISBN 9780998151311
