CLASS OVERVIEW: In this class, students continue to learn all the basic concepts necessary for them to become confident players. This class is intended to follow "Clarinets Take Flight! Beginning Clarinet Class - Level 1." Every week, students learn a new lesson in "A New Tune a Day for Clarinet." The class is further customized according to enrollment and students prior experience. This class is taught in an "I do," "We do," style of learning each song. I play/teach a section of the song, then students play it with me. Students are encouraged to participate through answering questions throughout the class. Students are required to purchase "A New Tune a Day for Clarinet" by Ned Bennett. Classes are also supplemented with a variety of interactive materials including handouts, music, and videos. CLASS SCHEDULE: •Lesson 1: The notes A and G, common time •Lesson 2: Eighth Notes, G Major Scale, Tempo and character markings •Lesson 3: Low and high Bb, dotted quarter notes, pickup notes •Lesson 4: The note Eb, the key of Bb Major •Lesson 5: The notes C, D, E, F, and G with the register key, D.S. al Fine •Lesson 6: The notes C, D, E, F, and G review •Lesson 7:The note B with the register key, smooth playing over the break (keeping right-hand down) •Lesson 8: Review and introduction of next class GENERAL POLICIES: > Some familiarity with online classes / zoom is highly recommended. Students need to be able to focus on clarinet. In order to do so, this should not be a learners first online class. > Please ensure you can attend all 8 weeks of the course before signing up. Recordings and materials are provided for those that have to miss a week. CLASS LENGTH: 45 minute classes - minimum of 4 learners, maximum of 6 30 minute classes - minimum of 2 learners, maximum of 4 CURRICULUM NOTES: > Students may join this class without taking the first class if they are already familiar with the notes B, C, D, E, F, G, and A [lower register]. Students also need to be already familiar with basic note reading, including: quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes. > For a full semester version of this class, please see my class "Clarinets Take Flight: Beginning Clarinet Class - Full Semester." > This class can be taken WITH or WITHOUT lessons. For ongoing private lessons, please see "Clarinet, Flute, or Saxophone Lessons: All Ages/Experience Levels."

Instruments Taught: Clarinet, Flute, and Saxophone
Ms. Katherine has been teaching clarinet, flute, and saxophone lessons for over 20 years to children of ages, levels, and exceptionalities. Online, she's been teaching at Outschool since August 2020. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance and music education, as well as a MA in Instructional Design. As a professional musician, she performs regularly in the Metro Detroit (Michigan) area with a variety of groups and ensembles. She enjoys walking, gardening, graphic design, and my three cats (Charlie, Conan, and Majestic)!

Mrs. Tara Turnes began studying the flute at age 13 and continued her studies at Florida State University where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Instrumental Music Education. She has taught band and general music in the public school system of Jacksonville, FL. She has additionally taught private woodwind and piano lessons and group flute and recorder classes for homeschoolers.
Currently she lives in Central Virginia with her husband, five children and her dog.

Instruments Taught: Saxophone and Clarinet
Derek Granger is a soloist, chamber musician, and music educator currently pursuing his DMA in Saxophone Performance under Carrie Koffman at The Hartt School. Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, he earned a BME from the University of Arizona, studying with Timothy McAllister and Kelland Thomas. Granger taught high school choir and music theory at Flowing Wells High School in Tucson, Arizona for the next six years, during which time the choirs garnered top ratings at state and local festivals and performed alongside the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. During this time, Granger also played alto saxophone with the Presidio Quartet, and frequently collaborated with area arts organizations including Arizona Repertory Theatre, The Rogue Theater, and Artifact Dance Company. Leaving Flowing Wells to pursue performance full-time, he earned an MM from Indiana University in 2019, while serving as an Associate Instructor in the studio of Otis Murphy. Selected competition awards include regional and national MTNA competitions, Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Collegiate Competition, Tucson Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, and the Hartt Chamber Music Competition. Granger serves on the summer faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
