Class Experience

Update 8-26-21: Due to parents request, this course has been changed to an "ongoing" course as students may enroll, & exit, at any time. And because children learn best by redundancy, pertinent topics may be repeated such as; introductions, class manners, manners at home, table manners, going places, play-dates, etc. to allow students ample opportunity to practice good manners!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We teachers/parents often say "Please mind your manners!" However, manners are often not adhered to, simply because the child has not yet mastered the ongoing list! They need clear descriptions and loads of practice. There are numerous manners taught in society and they vary depending on the environment, culture and other variables. Thus we will focus on common manners expected in most settings. For example, what manners may be nice to practice among siblings (& other family members), at the dinner table, on playdates, and during outings in general? We will cover these, and more!
Below you will find a loose outline, though the teacher will adjust according to the individual students in each class.
Week 1: This circle time will include fun activities, acting out manners used when meeting/greeting someone in person, and online!
Week 2: This circle time will focus on manners vital to building friendships, polite playdates, and for social outings in general.
Week 3:  Manners matter with family too! The key focus of this circle time will be how great manners are key to getting along with siblings (cousins etc.), and how manners even help convey love and respect to parents/guardians, grandparents, and other adult family members.
Week 4:  Eating in or eating out, good manners & etiquette are what it's all about!
Week 5: Let's Review! Students will be "quizzed" to reveal what manners they recall, and/or which manners need further instruction.
Weeks 6-10: Rotation begins where topics are based according to students in class, and ample opportunity to discuss & practice good manners is provided.
Let's practice our manners, with each other, and using puppetry! Students may participate with the teacher's puppet, bring their own stuffed animal/puppet to share with the class, or simply listen in if they're feeling a bit shy.
Note: Teacher will encourage participation, ask questions of each learner, yet be empathetic to students who may be hesitant to speak. Sometimes just showing up in the virtual classroom is a big step for young learners!
This class has been designed as circle time to capture students attention through class discussion, puppetry and show & tell. The goal is to make it fun and interactive for young children. A slide show will be presented, along with short snippets showing examples of both good, and less than desirable manners. There are numerous manners to cover, thus this class has been designed as an ongoing, yet stand-alone, weekly class. Feel free to drop in anytime as each class offers a different theme, related to the topic of good manners & etiquette. And to make it extra fun, perhaps your child may like to invite a friend to enroll for the same class!
Learning Goals
Students will gain a better understanding of what "good manners" entail overall. Another goal is to help instill a sense of pride in displaying excellent manners to their peers, as well as adults. Starting early is key!
Leadership skills will also be enhanced as the importance of being a good example will be emphasized along the way. FYI: You may see more details in the full course description provided.
Supply List
Students may bring a puppet or stuffed animal if they would like to participate in a fun time of acting out good (or poor) manners between them and their chosen prop (puppet, stuffed animal or doll). This is not mandatory as I understand some students may be shy, though they will surely enjoy watching their peers! The latter will typically help shy students gain confidence as they observe others.
Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I'm Teacher Rhonda! I enjoy teaching children/youth & young adults in general. Some subjects I have experience teaching younger children include; art, drama, reading, writing, & mathematics using time tested techniques. I have a passion for helping young artists hone their talents while building their self esteem in the process. Thus I will offer elementary students various classes in Phonics, Spelling, Reading, Addition/Subtraction & the Arts!
I also have years of experience teaching/mentoring youth & young adults various subjects such as English, ESL (English as a second language), Journalism, Visual Communication, Photography, Drama, Art, Etiquette & more... Thus, in the future I may offer middle/high school students classes such as Creative Writing, Writing for Stage & Screen, Character Development, Stage Make-up, Wardrobe & Costume Design, Fashion Design 101, Photoshop & Design, Photography 101, Magazine/Newsletter Design, and painting!
I currently offer private tutoring in ESL (English as a 2nd Language), reading, writing and basic math for students needing to advance in their grade level.
I hold dual Master's in Journalism/Visual Communication (Writing, Photography & Design) from Regent University and an MA in Family Counseling from Liberty University. In undergrad., I earned an AA in Fashion Design and studied Communication and Psychology. During high school and college, I enjoyed being on the annual staff, serving as yearbook photographer, being in drama/theatre groups and volunteering in community outreach, mentoring at-risk youth.
I have homeschooled my two daughters, while running an educational daycare and teaching English as a second language (ESL) online. I offered professional photography for over a decade, and volunteered to teach photography classes to aspiring young people in the inner-city. I also enjoyed my experiences helping teach classes in orphanages abroad. Locally, I taught English in a juvenile detention center one year, and served as a substitute teacher in the public school system for three years.
Regardless of the subjects I have taught, and may teach in the future, my underlying passion is to help instill a love of learning and belief in the endless possibilities for the road ahead! I am an encourager and a coach at heart.
I value the uniqueness of each student. I believe children/youth blossom with individual attention, positive affirmation and constructive feedback, coupled with attainable goals for progression. I purpose to help children enjoy the learning process, while at the same time learning to respect their peers, and the virtual classroom environment, so they may celebrate other's success as well as their own!
