Do you ever wonder what makes ink smear on paper when we touch it? Simple!!! Chromatography! Chromatography means "color writing" from its Greek word roots. Students will be introduced to the science of Chemistry- the way materials are put together and what they are made of including atoms and molecules. The main focus is on Chromatography- the separation of components in mixtures by allowing the substance to slowly disperse. We will discuss how Chromatography is used in current careers. Additionally, students will learn about this concept with a hands on activity. Students will also learn about the Scientific Method and how scientists use this tool to explore the world around them. A power point with visuals will be shared to introduce the topic and build background knowledge. Students will be encouraged to discuss any connections they make or questions/comments they have. After the information is presented and discussed, students will engage in an experiment to summarize learning. Students will complete a handout on The Scientific Method to complete together while conducting the experiment. The experiment will consist of students using markers to color lines/patterns on a coffee filter. The coffee filters contain cellulose which is the same chemical compound found in trees and plants. The marker ink is made of many different dye colors, which are made of different chemicals. (*Permanent markers won’t work) The coffee filter is then folded into fourths and place into a jar/cup of water. The filter will begin to absorb the water which will start to make the soluble ink begin to disperse. Here we will discuss the science behind chromatography again to tie in the information to the activity. Once the ink has dispersed completely, the coffee filter will be taken out to dry. Once dry, the coffee filters will be used to create a beautiful bouquet of flowers to share with loved ones!
Learning Goals
Students will gain knowledge about Chemistry and Chromatography.
Students will discuss scientific concepts with peers.
Students will learn about possible career options in Chromatography.
Students will be introduced to the Scientific Method and gain a deeper understanding of this tool.
Students will engage in hands on activity to deepen their understanding of Chromatography.
Students will create a paper flower bouquet.
Students will identify physical changes in materials once another material is added.
Students will recognize and explain that Science is grounded in observations that are testable.

Parental Guidance
Parental guidance may be required if a glass jar is used instead of a plastic cup.
Supply List
Paper coffee filters- at least 3, but students can definitely have more Variety of colored markers *NOT Permanent Glass jar or clear plastic cup- A spray bottle of water is also an option if glass or cups aren't available or don't want to be used Pipe cleaner- these will be the flower stems, so the # needed depends on how many flowers the student wants to make Popsicle stick or pencil to hold the coffee filter over the jar/glass Binder clip to attach the filter to the popsicle stick (a paper clip might work as well) The Scientific Method handout- the document file has been uploaded for printing
1 file available upon enrollment

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am super excited to teach students through this online platform. I am always learning and believe we should never stop trying new things and challenging ourselves. I have taught in the public school setting for 14 years, and have taught a range of grade levels from Pre-K to 5th grade. I have a Master's degree in Literacy and am currently enrolled in classes to earn my Administration certificate. I teach all subject matters and love integrating topics together. For instance, you can teach a plethora of literacy objectives while reading a book about insects or WWI. I also find teaching STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math) lessons very rewarding and engaging.
I do not believe in the "one size fits all" or "cookie cutter" ideas that are sometimes associated with education. Children learn in a variety of ways and I do my best to discover their individual abilities, and interests to create a learning environment that is conducive to meeting their needs and to deepen learning and understanding. My approach to teaching is more of a facilitator of learning rather than a direct instruction approach. I want my students to be talking and asking questions, analyzing, collaborating and forming conclusions. I encourage hands on learning and 21st century ideas and technology within my classroom. Our students today will be our future leaders tomorrow, and being able to influence children in a positive way through teaching is such a rewarding experience.
I am blessed with a very supportive family which includes my husband and son. We love camping, hiking, kayaking, anything that gets us to the great outdoors! I am a crafty and enjoy hobbies such as making jewelry, photography, repurposing old furniture, and reading a good book!
