Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner Level
Welcome to the Complete Beginner Chess Class! I'm excited to embark on this journey with your learner! We will focus on chess fundamentals to build a solid chess foundation for continual growth. This class is perfect for any student wanting to learn this ancient game! My hope is that your student will leave the class with a desire to continue learning and playing chess.

What we will learn:
1. Chess Basics: We will start by introducing the rules of the game, such as piece movement, board setup, and the main objective.

2. Combat: Facing off against the enemy, this is where things get exciting! Students will then practice basic skills such as capturing, protecting, checking, and getting out of check.

3. Endgame Techniques: Learning endgame techniques will keep the game of chess simple and intriguing for your new player. This will include, simple checkmates-in-one, queen & king mates, two rooks mates, and many others.

This course is designed to be interactive, with engaging chess positions, exercises, and games. Learners will not need an online chess account to participate in the activities. All exercises/activites will take place on lichess.org

There are many lessons to be taken from chess, such as logic and reasoning, preparation, concentration, patience, creativity, planning ahead, sportsmanship, pattern recognition, and many more. My sincere hope is for your learner to leave this class with a strong foundational knowledge of chess and feel confident in their new ability.

I am more than excited to spend time with your student learning chess.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am passionate about teaching chess, a timeless and intellectually empowering game. My enthusiasm for teaching chess extends to all ages of learners. Recently, I got my local library to hold a monthly chess night where players and learners can come together and experience the incredible game. While at these gatherings I have had the opportunity to mentor and teach other chess enthusiasts. This has ranged from new players to more advanced learners, of all age ranges.
