Carbon is one of the most important and unusual elements in the universe. In this course, the basic structure of the carbon atom will be presented and students will closely observe samples of graphite, diamond and carbon fiber. The course will describe a recently identified and very exciting form of carbon -- graphene. Some of the biologically and economically important compounds of carbon will also be presented. The issue of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas will be briefly discussed. I believe most students learn best if words and text are combined with pictures, short videos, and demonstrations -- so my classes stress a visual approach to learning. I always encourage students to interact and ask questions!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach classes that help students get excited about science! I've done homeschool teaching and volunteer science teaching in the public schools at elementary through high school levels. I have a PhD degree in Biology with 60 published research papers. Although I have broad interests in all of the sciences, my lab research focused on the structure, function, and toxicology of the lung - including studies of radioactive materials, air pollutants and asthma drugs. I believe students find science less difficult and certainly more interesting if they truly understand fundamental concepts. In my teaching, I try to make difficult concepts understandable by using observations, demonstrations and short videos. You can see some of my videos on my youtube channel (science4man). Encouraging curiosity and an appreciation of the beauty of science are always teaching goals!
