After this one-time class learners will understand what carbon dating is and why chemistry plays an important part in determining ages of archaeological finds.

The time before written records is called prehistory. Even though there aren't written records there is still information about the world from long ago. Using a chemistry process called carbon dating, scientists can calculate the age of ancient remains of plants, animals, and even humans! In this one-time class you will learn about chemistry basics, draw an atom, and listen and discuss as I explain how chemistry helps us learn about ancient history! Learners will know the parts of an atom, what "nuclear" means in chemistry, and be able to explain what atoms have to do with calculating ages of things using carbon dating.
I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as scientific knowledge. By adding a new twist to a familiar topic we can expand our thinking to include new possibilities. I have taught science to homeschool students for the last 16 years and during that time I have developed many teaching techniques and hands-on projects to help students explore concepts in new and exciting ways.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will briefly refer to the use of carbon dating to determine the age of ancient human remains. I do not include any pictures or specific examples of ancient remains, but if learners ask I will provide information about some famous finds.
