Class Experience

#Creative
If you love the Sound of Music or if you want your child to have a deeper understanding of the historical context of this iconic American Musical, this is your camp/class.

Teens and tweens will need to have watched the movie musical starring Julie Andrews prior to taking this camp/class.

Mr. D is a total Sound of Music nerd. He's been to Austria, and he took the Sound of Music bus tour. He's watched the musical hundreds of times while teaching public school, and he has had numerous interesting and important discussions with his students while digging into the deeper meanings of this incredibly important work of musical art. He's also toured Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. While this musical is incredibly upbeat with a wonderful happy ending, the plot of the show gives us the opportunity to dig into the deeper meanings and contexts of what was happening during that period of time through the experiences of the characters.

We learn through art.

In this class, we will have important discussions as we dig deeper into the meaning and historical context of this show. Performing is not a requirement for this class for those who simply want to dig deeper and learn more about this show, but if your learner loves to perform songs from this show, they will have several opportunities to do it!

June 5-Class 1- We will start with a Kahoot game to see who knows the most about the plot and songs from this show. Then, we will give students the opportunity to perform or to "sing along" to songs from the show.

June 6-Class 2- A lot of students watch and love this show, but they don't understand the deeper historical context of the show.
We will start with a Kahoot to see what each students already knows and understands historically about World War II and the Holocaust, and the importance of the moral stance and incredible risk Captain Von Trapp took when he took his family into hiding rather than work for the Nazi's. There will be more time for sing-alongs for the performers in the group!

June 7-Class 3- We will explore the "real life" Von Trapps as well as the actors who played them. We will watch a video clip of a cast reunion that happened on one of the anniversary celebrations of this iconic show, and hear about behind the scenes stories of the filming of the show.

#Creative This is a fun show with a happy ending, but students will be digging into the deeper meaning and historical context of this show. Over the years, when I've taught this unit in my public school classroom, some students had seen the show many times, but never understood the last 1/3 of the movie when the family leaves their home. We will be discussing the reasons as a class. There are moral lessons and historical lessons that students will walk away with in this class. Students will need access to Kahoot which is easily and readily available at no cost.

I have been to Austria and taken the Sound of Music bus tour. I have stayed in the house where the filming occurred and took a personal tour of the home where I learned a lot about what happened during the filming. I will share those stories with the students. I have taken the train to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, and walked through to town to the camp where I learned first hand from a Harvard educated tour guide about what happened there.
I have watched this movie hundreds of times with my own public school students, and I have led the important conversations that happen when we choose to look deeper into a movie like this one which can teach so many lessons.
