BREATHING LIFE INTO THE SCRIPT - Character Building & Emotional Availability In this two-fold class taught by television and film’s Virginia Vogt, actors will learn methods aimed at breathing life into the script. The words on the page of a script come alive the moment an actor speaks them. It is the responsibility of great actors to take these words and transform them into powerful and genuine performances by: -creating a fully developed backstory, and formulating a complete character, -unlocking their emotional vulnerability, as emotions dramatically alter the meaning of a scene and inform acting choices. Actors will participate in fun and compelling group activities, as well as do some creative writing. Actors must show up with a readiness to explore, an openness to others, a writing utensil, and a notebook.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of character development, even when approaching a small script or part. Students will develop an awareness of their emotional availability and how it relates to a script.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be talking about emotions of all kinds, including anger and sadness. While I do not use emotional recall (going back into the actor's memory to a time they felt a specific emotion), sometimes talking about certain emotions as they relate to a story or script, can be difficult for students. Please know that no student will be pushed to explain or express anything that makes them uncomfortable.
Supply List
A journal (preferred) or paper Pen or pencil (If student prefers to write on a computer or other device, that is acceptable as well)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
