Class Experience

Beginner Level
Is your kid is curious about "break dancing"? Whether your child has no experience breakin', has learned some moves from Rae's Kids Dance Jam, or just makes up their own moves at home, this class is designed to help kids build a breakin' foundation. Will explore a little of breakin' history and terminology while learning moves that can be combined in a variety of ways. We will not do back flips or spin on our heads. If your child has tons of breakin' experience then this class is not recommended. This class is best for beginners or those looking to work on their foundation. This class focuses on safety and execution instead of trying to out perform each other.

Each class starts with a warm up that helps improve strength and flexibility which is important for executing power moves & freezes.

This is not a "workout" to hip hop music. At times students may stop dancing to watch a video clip of a dance move, or engage in class discussion. In-class discussion allows participants to ask questions and contribute movement ideas. Participants will have the benefit of observing their peers. The teacher will guide participants through a choreographed routine and use student input to shape the routine. We offer a friendly environment for students of all abilities and all genders. Even if your child feels like they have no rhythm or 2 left feet, this class will empower them to find their own musicality. This class includes 25% discussion-based interaction with the teacher and peers. 

This class involves physical movement (all abilities are welcome). It is recommended for your child to have water nearby. Students should refrain from eating during class.

While student song requests are encouraged we are unable to play songs that contain profanity even if these songs are an important part of hip hop music history. This class contains a variety of break dance and hip hop music.

Lesson 1:
Uprocks
 Students learn exercises to warm up their muscles, build strength, and increase flexibility. They then learn beginner friendly standing breakin' moves that will instantly help them feel more authentic in their breakin'.

Transitions
 Students focus on moves that allow them to transition from standing to getting down to the floor.

More Uprocks
 Students learn more Up Rocks and how to connect them with moves learned in weeks 1 and 2.

Down Rocks
 Students learn moves they can do on the floor while and how to combine their new skills with various up rocks and transitions from the previous videos.

Parental Guidance
Physical Advisory: This class involves physical movement. Shoes are not required for class and are optional. If your child is dancing on a wooden floor shoes or bare feet may be ideal as children may slip when wearing just socks. If your child is dancing on a carpet, socks may be ideal as sliding will be easier. Ideally the dance space will be at least feet 3-4 feet wide and free of obstruction. Participants have been known to dance in living rooms, bedrooms, and any other space that allows arms to be extended out to the side. Periodically the teacher may present a short dance clip from YouTube to aide in broadening student understanding of what a break dance move or Cypher battle looks like. By registering for this class it is understood that each family has considered the space the child is moving in and it's appropriateness for a movement based activity. ***Camera must be on during class and students must dance on camera. The teacher must be able to see if students are moving safely. Students who refuse to keep their camera on, stay on camera while dancing, keep camera pointed at the ceiling, or keep lights off while dancing will receive 2 warning. No refund will be given for lack of participation or inability to follow safety guidelines.*** By registering for this class it is understood that the instructor is not responsible for injuries that may result from participation including injuries that may result from children not following directions. Injuries may include, bumps or bruises (example: a kid spins and falls down), fractures/ sprains/ broken limbs (example: a kid chooses not to follow instruction and tries to do a back flip). By registering for this class it is understood that each family has considered the physical health of their child and has taken into consideration any restrictions on movement that a family physician has advised. While most movement is not vigorous enough to upset an individuals asthma, we respect that each individual has different physical abilities. Children are encouraged to stop any movement that causes physical or emotional pain. If you are unsure whether your child will be able to fully participate physically you are welcome to email the instructor prior to registration. The instructor is not a physician and cannot give medical advice.
