US Grade 1 - 3
In this one-time class, we will construct a simple accordion-style homemade book. Then we will brainstorm story and book ideas together, and learners will get started writing or drawing in their books. As learners work on their books, I will check-in, providing support as needed, and encouraging learners to share ideas with each other. I provide suggestions that are relevant to the books that are being created in class. This may include how illustrations help to tell the story, story sequence or what types of details might be included in a non-fiction book. Learners may not complete their whole book during our time together, but everyone will have the opportunity to share their work before the end of class. Bookmaking can be a motivating way for young learners to use their developing literacy skills. I find that when children are part of a community of authors/illustrators, they inspire each other to try out new ideas which they can continue to work on after class is over.
Learning Goals
The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in creative and meaningful ways both in class and afterwards. I believe that learning to write is a process that develops gradually with support, time, and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The book each learner creates in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing words, sentences and/or paragraphs). The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development and to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways.

I see childhood as a time of wonder, exploration, and discovery.
I have a Masters in early childhood and inclusive education with an emphasis on literacy. I have been an educator for over 20 years, a journey that has given me the chance to work in many creative settings ranging from literacy programs to creating early childhood programming for a children’s museum. For four years, I worked as an educator and mentor teacher in a Reggio-inspired school dedicated to inquiry-based learning. I am bilingual in English/Spanish. I am also a mom of two inquisitive kids, and I homeschooled for part of the time while we lived in South America.
My childhood was full of art, time outside, music, and stories which are all a big part of who I am as an educator. I love to help learners dive deeper into their interests and engage their imagination. Most of my classes explore fun and meaningful ways to practice and build literacy skills (creating comics/storytelling/nature journaling/creative writing…).
I see all children as capable individuals who are motivated to learn when their interests are honored and they are encouraged to make their own discoveries. I love to present children with open-ended learning experiences with room for them to express themselves in their own creative ways. I love being a part of the Outschool community!
