In this course, the human body becomes like a drum set! "Body percussion" is a way of creating musical rhythms by using the body as an instrument--for example, by stomping, slapping the legs, and clapping. Students will learn various body percussion sequences, which we will practice together. Each week, new rhythms will be added to the sequences we have already learned. Students will also have opportunities to create their own rhythms, which they will share with the class. By the end of the course, we will have a long "composition" of rhythms that we have practiced together and mastered. This is an active class! The weekly course meeting time is 30 minutes, and we will be moving almost the entire time, with some water breaks here and there. There will be lots of "messing up," laughing, trying again, and noise-making. Students will need to be in an area where they have enough freedom of movement to swing their arms around and move without being too restricted. Body percussion requires close listening, concentration, practice, and effort. It is a joyful, fun way to experience sophisticated rhythms. This course is appropriate for those with or without a musical background, and students should be willing to participate by stomping, clapping, etc. Week one: Introductions; explore different sounds; learn 2-3 percussion rhythms. Week two: Review the percussion sequence taught the previous week; add 2-3 new percussion rhythms to it. Week three: Review the entire percussion sequence learned thus far; add 2-3 new rhythms to it. Week four: Review the entire percussion sequence learned thus far; add 2-3 new rhythms to it; one or two students teach their original sequence to the others, and this is added to the sequence. Week five: Review the entire percussion sequence learned thus far; add 2-3 new rhythms to it; one or two students teach their original sequence to the others, and this is added to the sequence. Week six: Review the entire percussion sequence learned thus far; add 2-3 new rhythms to it; one or two students teach their original sequence to the others, and this is added to the sequence. Week seven: Review the entire percussion sequence learned thus far; add 2-3 new rhythms to it; one or two students teach their original sequence to the others, and this is added to the sequence. Week eight: Practice the entire rhythm sequence together; break into smaller groups to perform for each other.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Through my teaching, I strive to encourage a love and knowledge of music that will be valuable to the student for a lifetime! I enjoy sharing the vivid beauty and excitement of music, and helping students explore new sounds and masterpieces that open up new worlds of music to them.
I have taught music history & theory, music appreciation, piano lessons, and other music courses from preschoolers to adults, over the past 15 years. I currently teach piano lessons, and music courses at a community college.
I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, and a Master of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy. My main instrument is the piano, but I also play the harp for fun, and I'm teaching myself to play the banjo. In my spare time, I enjoy discovering new music (the weirder the better!), modern art, eating dark chocolate, and figuring out how magic tricks are done!
