Biology 9-Week Course w/ Labs | (Part 4 of 4) Semester Course | w/ Report Card
In this 9-week course, students will learn about the theory of evolution. The content is covered in a fourth 9-week course in a conventional biology class. Engaged students have been successful on state assessments. Charter School & Homeschool Approved.
What's included
9 live meetings
7 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. The students will have homework after each class. They will be asked recall and open-ended questions where they will have to apply what they learned to correctly answer the question. I ask that the students review what was what they learned every day. Optional: I ask that the students dedicate 20-30 minutes of study time each day.Assessment
The students will be assessed as they engage in discussions and as they interact in a question-answer session at the end of class. The students will periodically be given quizzes and/or formative assessments. This will guide my instruction. I will review what the students need.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
In this 9-week course, students will learn about living organisms, taxonomy and the theory of evolution. The content is covered in the 4th 9-week course in a conventional biology class. Engaged students learn content needed to successfully take assessments. The students will investigate and understand bases for modern classification systems. Week 1 - Resistance Week 2 - Succession Week 3 - Structural similarities among organisms Week 4 - Biochemical similarities and differences among organisms Week 5 - Fossils Week 6 - Genetics of Evolution Week 7 - Evidence and explanations for biological evolution Week 8 - Speciation Week 8 - Effects of natural events and human activities on ecosystem Week 9 - Local student ecology The students will learn about the observations Charles Darwin made on the voyage of the Beagle. The students will learn about the influences on Darwin’s development of evolutionary theory. They will also learn how a species can evolve through natural selection. This section will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. The students will learn that Charles Darwin provided evidence to show that evolution took place. He also made logical arguments to support his theory that evolution occurs by natural selection. Since Darwin’s time, much more evidence has been gathered. The evidence includes a huge number of fossils. It also includes more detailed knowledge of living things, right down to their DNA. This section will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. Fossils are a window into the past. The students will learn about the similarities and differences in the structures of different species. Similar body parts may be homologies or analogies. Both provide evidence for evolution. They provide clear evidence that evolution has occurred. This section will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. My 1st 9-Week Physical Science course will pick up where this course leaves off.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of what comprises life. They will improve their understanding of taxonomy and evolution. Engaged students will improve their ability to respond to Biology state assessment questions.
