In this class we will read and discuss the book Nate the Great together. Students are to read the assigned pages before the first class hour. Class periods will be made up of reading and discussing parts of the text together and also working on various Language Arts activities during class time. Skills that will be covered are: characters, plot, setting common and proper nouns use of commas in a list or series use of quotation marks in dialogue in a story sentence punctuation format of a letter (comma after greeting and closing) expansion of simple sentences Day 1 – Discuss pages 7-25; Discuss characters, setting, plot as well as common and proper nouns. Day 2 – Discuss pages 26-48-; Identify and practice commas in a series, the use of quotations marks and expanding simple sentences. Day 3 - Discuss pages 49-62; Discuss the format of a letter and kinds of sentences using different ending punctuation. Day 4 - In class writing assignment on the book. Students will do quite a bit of writing and reading during class time. This class works very well if your child is comfortable with basic reading and writing. Knowing how to spell words is not essential - just being very comfortable with pencil and paper will be helpful. This class is designed for beginning readers. Students need to be comfortable reading the text, but they do not need to know every word in the book. Please look at the book to make sure it is a good fit for the student.
