In this course you will learn the whats, whys, and hows of mindfulness! We will cover a variety of mindfulness strategies, what they are, why they work, and how to practice them! During each class learners will discover a new strategy and then be given time to practice the strategy. After practicing we will reflect about how it worked for them and I'll answer any questions you might have about it. Week 1Lesson 1What is Mindfulness?Today we will learn what mindfulness is, why it works, and how to practice it.Week 2Lesson 2Breathing StrategiesToday we will learn how the body and brain are connected through breath.Week 3Lesson 3Guided MeditationsWe will use guided meditations to activate our brains ability to visualize and focus on calming experiences.Week 4Lesson 4Grounding PracticesWe'll practice using our senses today to ground ourselves.Week 5Lesson 5GratitudeToday we will focus on the things we are thankful for in our lives as a way to cope with difficult emotions.Week 6Lesson 6AffirmationsWe will learn to speak positive words over ourselves.Week 7Lesson 7Mindful MovementWe will practice going through some yoga-based movements to connect our brain and body today.Week 8Lesson 8Zen ZoneToday we will think about the strategies that worked for us and then create a space filled with reminders of those things so we can practice them daily.Week 9Lesson 9Putting It All TogetherWe will review everything we learned and discuss a plan for implementing mindfulness strategies every day!
Students will learn what mindfulness is, why it works, and how to practice mindfulness on a daily basis through the use of affirmations, gratitude, breathing techniques, grounding, guided meditation, and mindful movement.

Yoga mat or other soft, stable surface
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
During week 7, learners will be taught to stretch and pose with several yoga-based movements. Please ensure your child has adequate space if they would like to participate. For these movements, it is best not to wear shoes as this allows students to receive sensory input through their feet and helps with balance. A yoga mat can be helpful to reduce the risk of slipping. A blanket (on a stable surface) or carpeted area can be used in place of a yoga mat if one is not available. Students will benefit from having quick access to water throughout class as well. By enrolling in this course you agree to the following statement: "The instructor will take all reasonable care to ensure the classes are fun and safe; however, I understand that students will be engaging in some physical activity and therefore may involve some risk of injury. I assume these risks and take full responsibility for any personal injury sustained by my child which might occur as a result of participating in this program.
