Welcome to writing for kids! In this course students (approximately five (5) to seven (7) years of age) will practice their sight words by playing interactive games like Roll and Read, Beat the Clock, and Word Jumbles. Students will also apply their knowledge of sight words by creating their own sentences and story pages. Students will be in classes of no more than six (6) students total. This is a great course for students to begin to learn the art of writing, and for students who love to do craft projects. We assemble and design a unique book cover, and in class I will teach students demonstrate a few ways this can be done. During the first section of class we will warm up by playing different sight words games. We will also choose two new words of the day that we will focus on during the writing portion of the class. A list of sight words will be posted that we will be working on for this course. The main writing section will focus on practicing writing sentences using the “kids writing” method. This method encourages students to stretch words by using the phonetic sounds of each letter within a word. We will practice by first thinking of a sentence, then writing a picture, a sentence, and if an adult is available to assist, a corrected version of the sentence. Finally, we will implement the “I do, you do, we do,” style of teaching. This style first includes modeling how to write a sentence using the kid writing method, writing a second (different) sentence, and finally, having students write their own sentence. Students will be guided through each portion of the writing process and will have approximately eight (8) minutes to work on their own sentence. Special Notes: This class has students writing and working independently throughout. If your child is very new to writing they may need additional assistance before working more independently. This is a basic/beginner writing class, therefore, it would be important for students to know their alphabet and letters. Students could also come to class with a basic understanding of letter sounds, but it should be noted that these are one of the skills we will be working on during the course.
Learning Goals
During this class students will develop a variety of skills both in reading and writing. We will practice reading sight words, and we will practice writing letters by stretching words and concentrating on the sounds of each letter within a word.
