In this 4-week course, learners will begin to learn the fundamentals of the Japanese language, including the primary alphabets, common words and phrases, and the essentials of Japanese history and culture. Classes will be divided in half, with the first day of class each week dedicated to language acquisition and practice, and the second class being discussion of historical highlights and culture. The second class each week may also include language instruction or review as deemed necessary. This class is a wonderful foundation course for students who have an interest in Japanese language and culture and will adequately prepare them for the Intermediate Japanese course that is offered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japanese Course Offerings: -Beginner Japanese: Intro to Language and Culture I (ages 8-12)* -Beginner Japanese: Intro to Language and Culture II (ages 13-17) -Intermediate Japanese: Reading and Speaking I (ages 8-12) -Asobi ni ikou yo!: Japanese Hang-Out (ages 10-14) *You are currently reading about this course ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Week One: -Standard Greetings -Self-Introductions -Introduction to Romaji and 1st half of Hiragana -A brief history of Japan Week Two: -2nd half of Hiragana -Pronunciation and Phonics -Japanese Grammar Structure -Anime and Manga, the history and effects on culture Week Three: -1st half of Katakana -When and Why We Use Katakana -History of loan words -Konbini Culture Week Four: -2nd half of Katakana -Phrases for travel -Common phrases in anime and manga -Important customs and expectations This course is designed to adequately prepare learners for the Intermediate Level of the courses I offer here on Outschool, and will give students a solid foundation for continuing to learn Japanese, or prepare them for upcoming travel.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about Romaji, Hiragana, Katakana, and when to use each of the alphabets. They will be introduced to common greetings and other basic phrases for daily use. Discussion will be held about Japan’s history, interesting cultural points, and what to expect when traveling in Japan.

Supply List
Students will need paper and something to write with to practice writing the characters. An alphabet chart can be provided to students for both the Hiragana and Katakana alphabets upon request.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I studied the language and culture for all four years of my bachelor’s degree and was the official tutor for Japanese for my college. I studied abroad in Japan in 2018, and I have since tutored Japanese online and been a personal teacher for students in Japanese.
