Class Experience

The opening of a chess game refers to the first couple of moves and dictates the flow of the rest of the game. In this class, we will learn the fundamentals of having a strong opening. I will give guidelines, and more importantly, explain the reasons behind the guidelines to give students a strong understanding of chess and the opening of a game.

The structure of the class will be a mixture of lecture and practical exercises. Students who join this class should have a basic understanding of how chess pieces move.

==================== About the Teacher ====================

I fell in love with the game of chess when my dad first taught me to play when I was 7 years old. To this day, it is a precious pass-time that we share. I went on to become the regional elementary champion and participated in the Canadian University Chess Championship as part of the University of Toronto team. I currently hold a rating of about 1900 and would love to share my passion for chess with anyone willing to learn. I encourage a growth mindset in all my classes, to take every win and loss as a learning experience.

What do you enjoy? What makes you come alive?

Each person is unique in their interests and passions and one of the joys of life is discovering and exploring them.

I have and Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto in Environmental Physics, and was an Environmental Consultant for 3 years before I discovered my love for teaching and mentoring. From 2015-2017, I traveled around Asia, volunteering as a teacher in rural communities where I taught English, Math, Science and Dance to children ranging from 4-16 years of age. I have been an online teacher to children for 5 years, using gamification to keep learners interested and engaged throughout each lesson.

My interests and expertise are in mindfulness, meditation, music, dance, gaming, and travel. I would be honored to share my passions, fascinations, and knowledge with your children in a fun, creative, and exciting way that will ignite a fire in them as well.

Did I mention I like gaming? Play is an integral part of the human experience and enhances cognitive, social, and mental well-being. Games teach teamwork, sportsmanship, critical thinking, and leadership. I started a company called Good Games where we create a positive space for young gamers to play, learn, grow, and have fun.
