Babka is a traditional dessert made of braided bread or cake. We'll learn how to make two babka recipes: chocolate and cinnamon. I'll provide recipes and supply lists. My approach to baking classes is to provide step-by-step instructions and photos (that I've taken of my own babka baking) from start to finish. There are plenty of opportunities to ask questions. I go in to lots of detail (how to cut the recipe if you're baking for a small group of 2 people, braiding options). The class is very interactive, hands-on, and practical. Any student who has some experience, I invite them to share their input or advice as well. Session 1: Step-by-step photos and explanation of how to make a cinnamon babka. We'll cover questions about the recipe, ingredients, equipment, and technique. Learners will then make a cinnamon babka after the 1st session is over. Session 2: We'll review how the cinnamon babka went, what they learned from that effort, and how they might tinker with the recipe. We'll look at different braids. We'll do a step-by-step approach to making a chocolate babka. Then we'll cover alternative recipes. Interaction will be continual. It's not necessary for students to have any experience with a babka previously. But they need to be safe in a kitchen, they need to be comfortable using the oven to bake with. And it's nice but not essential if they've worked with dough previously.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I was an instructor at George Mason University, University of Massachusetts, and University of Virginia. I've coached High School Debate (we finished 2nd in the country at NFL). I've coached youth soccer (including multiple all-star teams). I've coached multiple Odyssey of the Mind teams. I've authored 5 non-fiction books and multiple articles in professional journals. And I've been a guest presenter on a range of topics for elementary and middle schools in their GT programs. I teach a wide range of diverse classes (consistent with my interests and experience). I'm a big believer that learning works best when it is interactive (so I believe in having lots of activities), it is organized (I have clear learning objectives and my courses are structured), and fun (I look for ways to engage learners and find information that appeals to them and makes the subject come alive). I used to compete in agility with my rat terrier Ike. And I've visited in person over 30 Civil War battlefields.
If you want to schedule a class with me that isn't at a previously scheduled time or I'm not listed as available, just message me. We can probably work something out.
