Beginner Level
In this class, students will learn how to use the MIT App Inventor to create small apps for their smartphones. They will learn to add and modify the objects they wish to use in the app, use block coding to make the app functional, and test out the app using a cell phone or the built-in emulator (if using Windows-based computers only). Those using Android phones can download the app to their phones while those using Apple products will be able to test it out on the phone, but not download it permanently on their phones. Using the Zoom platform, I will share my screen as I guide them through the MIT App Inventor platform to create a few small apps. They will learn how to include sound, vibration, touch, motion, photos in their apps as well as incorporate phone sensors, such as the accelerometer and camera. Students can customize their apps and add other features to their apps, such as text-to-sound, videos, sliders, buttons and more. They will make the following app 1) Hello Purr or Touch the Bee (depending on their interest) 2) Doodle Drawing App 3) Ball Tilt Maze 4) Etch-A-Sketch 4) Pong Game
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to add objects and sensors to their app and how to modify them to control how the design of the app to affect how they appear on the screen.
Students will use block coding to control the actions they want to occur in their app.
Syllabus
5 Lessons
over 5 WeeksLesson 1:
MIT App Inventor Basics and First App
You will learn how to navigate the MIT App Inventor program, design your app by adding devices modifying them, and uploading media such as pictures and sound. You will also learn to use Block Coding to bring the app to life and make it interactive.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Using Phone Devices and Ball Tilt Maze Game
Students will learn how to incorporate built-in phone apps like the accelerometer and camera into their app. Students will take a picture through the app and then learn how to make a ball roll according to the tilt of the phone using the phone's accelerometer.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Doodle App
Students will learn how to add buttons to allow users to choose different colors and then draw doodles by touching and dragging their fingers on the screen. They will add a button that will erase the picture after responding to a notification asking if they sure really want to erase it.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Etch-A-Sketch
Students will make an Etch-A-Sketch Game by adding buttons to control the drawing direction and color of the lines. They will then use the accelerometer to erase the picture when the phone is shaken.

They will also need to download the MIT App Inventor App to their cell phones
Supply List
Computer - Windows computers work best Cell Phone (optional if using a Windows computer) - Android phones are recommended. If using an Apple (MAC) computer, you need to have a cell phone to test the app since the emulator on the website will not work on Apple computers. I have been a private school middle and high school science teacher for over 30 years. and on Outschool for 4 years. During that time, I taught classes in chemistry, engineering, earth science, life science, chemistry, forensic science, biology, and health. I enjoy teaching through hands-on experimentation and I believe that students learn best when they are activity engaged in the learning process on projects that they have chosen to learn.
I am an amateur photographer and love to photograph my grandchildren, my dog, and wildlife. I enjoy creating scrapbooks from my photos. I also enjoy tinkering with my Arduino and 3D printer to create inventions of my own
