Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This course will review key points and provide guided practice problems and exam strategies for the AP Chemistry curriculum to help students prepare for the exam scheduled for May 1, 2023. The AP curriculum has 9 units with each meeting focusing on one unit. Each session will begin with a brief instructor-led review of key topics in that unit using Powerpoint presentations (5-10 minutes). These will be followed by practice problems carried out in the following way: first individual time to attempt the question, then small-group (3-4 learners) comparison of answers in break out rooms, then instructor-led discussions of the answers. The cycle should take about 12 minutes for short problems. The goal is to complete a minimum of 3 practice problems per 50 minute session. All practice problems will be published, freely available questions used on previous AP exams.

Students are expected to have taken an AP Chemistry course (or equivalent) either before or concurrently with this course. This course will not cover every aspect of the AP Curriculum which is meant to be covered in a year-long or double-block semester course. The purpose of the course is review, practice and maximizing students' performance on the AP Exam.

Units listed below refer to the AP Chemistry Curriculum and Exam Description found at https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-chemistry.

Meeting 1: Unit 1: Atomic Structure and Properties (focus on periodic trends)
Meeting 2: Unit 2: Molecular and Ionic compounds and Unit 3: Intermolecular Forces and Properties
Meeting 3: Unit 4: Chemical Reactions
Meeting 4: Unit 5: Kinetics
Meeting 5: Unit 6: Thermodynamics
Meeting 6: Unit 7: Equilibrium
Meeting 7: Unit 8: Acids and bases
Meeting 8: Unit 9: Applications of Thermodynamics

I am a college professor and have taught General Chemistry (the college course mirrored by AP Chemistry) for the past 14 years. I taught AP Chemistry for six years before that.

I have been a grader ("reader") for the AP Chemistry exam in 2008, 2020 and 2022. I also am a College Board consultant, leading week-long workshops for AP Chemistry teachers each summer.
